This study attempts to suggest what role youth environmental organizations should play to grow into 'climate citizens' who consistently maintain awareness of climate change and act to bring about changes of social systems and policies even after they become adults. To this end, 'climate citizenship,' the closest concept to understanding people who actively solve the climate change problem, was adopted as an analysis framework. For the study, four adult subjects with experience in youth environmental organization activities were chosen. Then, by adopting a life history research method using narratives, it was analyzed how the experience of participating in youth environmental organization activities affected the formation of climate citizenship throughout their life. As a result of the study, participants could acquire 'meaningful experiences' such as forming relationships with peers and participating in decision-making through various hands-on activities. However, as an adult, no research participants had climate citizenship characteristics. Youth environmental organizations were successful in attracting youth attention and interest but did not play a significant role in laying the foundation for youth members to grow into climate citizens after they become adults. Therefore, this study synthesized the research results and suggested five improvements to ensure that the influence of youth environmental organization participation experience stays in the youth period and continues throughout adulthood. It proposes the improvement plans of more systematic and professional environmental education for the youth members, nationwide lifelong environmental education, operational improvement of environmental organizations to secure social trust, provision of various and balanced information and discussion-oriented education methods, and activation of national youth gathering.

이 연구에서는 청소년 환경단체 활동에 참여한 청소년들이 성인이 된 이후에도 기 후변화에 대한 문제의식을 유지하고, 사회 제도와 정책 변화를 이끌어내기 위해 행동 하는 ‘기후 시민’으로 성장하기 위해서 청소년 환경단체가 어떠한 역할을 해야 하는지 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 기후변화 문제를 해결하기 위하여 능동적이고, 적극 적으로 행동하는 사람들을 이해하는 데 가장 근접한 개념인 ‘기후 시민성’을 분석틀로 활용하였으며, 청소년 환경단체 활동에 참여한 경험이 있는 성인 4명을 연구대상으로 선정하였다. 또한 내러티브를 활용한 생애사 연구 방법을 채택하여 청소년 환경단체 활동 참여 경험이 삶 전반에 걸쳐 기후 시민성 형성에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 분 석하였다. 연구 결과 능동적이고, 체험적인 활동이 이루어지면서 또래들과 관계를 형 성하고, 의사결정 과정에 참여하는 등 당시의 활동 참여는 ‘의미 있는 경험’이라 할 수 있었다. 하지만 성인이 된 현재는 기후 시민성 특징을 고루 갖춘 연구 참여자는 발견하지 못하였다. 청소년 환경단체는 청소년들의 관심과 흥미를 끄는 데까지는 성공했지만, 이들이 성인이 된 이후에 기후 시민으로 성장하도록 견인하는 역할은 해내 지 못하였다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 연구 결과를 종합하여 청소년 환경단체 활동 참여 경험의 영향이 청소년 시기에 머무르지 않고, 성인이 된 이후에도 영향을 미칠 수 있도록 하기 위한 개선방안으로 청소년 회원들을 대상으로 한 보다 체계적이고 전문적 인 환경교육과 전 국민 대상 평생 환경교육, 환경단체 운영방식 개선을 통한 사회적 신뢰 확보, 다양하고 균형잡힌 정보 제공과 토론 중심의 교육 방식, 전국 단위의 청소년 환경기후 모임 활성화 등을 제안하였다.
