This paper aims to examine the migration experience of 1.5 generation Koreans from Spanish-speaking South America with a particular emphasis on the re-migration to Korea in a transnational perspective. The re-migration is not regarded as a singular or one-way movement, but as part of routines and daily rhythms of life across the world. The paper also focuses on transnational subjects that strategically use their social and cultural capital as a tool to raise their social status. As a strategy for that, they utilize the linguistic capital of Spanish, which they acquired through their experience of living in South America. They knew that it was the highly prized and effective cultural capital which they possessed in a foreign language education market of Korea. A literature review and in-depth interviews with three Koreans from South America were carried out as research methods. The paper first describes how they act as transnational subjects who crossed over the social fields with social networks, including social media, friends and family ties. It also explains what strategies they consider and utilize to maximize their profits while they move across the two social fields of South America and Korea. In addition, it analyzes how they use the cultural capital of Spanish constructed as embodied capital from their experiences in South America and how they overcome the limitations caused by linguistic imperialism in Korea. The paper is meaningful in that it discusses implications for the transnational migration patterns of Koreans from South America. Also, it argues that they are transnational subjects who willingly cross the borders and design, adjust, and deliver effective strategies to increase their social status, especially in colonial nature of the foreign language system in Korea.

본 연구는 스페인어권 남미 출신 1.5세 한인들의 이주 경험, 특히, 한국으로의 재 이주 현상을 초국가주의적인 접근을 통해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이들이 자신 이 소유한 문화적 자원을 사회적 지위 상승을 위한 도구로 전략적으로 활용하는 초국 가적 주체라는 것에 주목하고자 한다. 이들은 남미 거주 경험을 통해 획득한 스페인어 라는 문화자본을 한국 사회에서 활용하였고, 그것의 이용 가능성 및 효과성이 가장 높은 분야인 외국어 교육에 종사하고 있다. 사회적장을 이동하는 초국가적 주체성 실천의 양상을 살펴보기 위해 남미 출신 한인 3명을 대상으로 구술사 연구를 진행하 였다. 먼저 이들이 남미와 한국이라는 사회적 장을 이동하며 초국가적 주체로서 어떠 한 전략을 구상하여 실행하는지 살펴본다. 그리고 이들이 남미에서 거주한 경험으로 체화된 스페인어라는 문화자본의 활용 양상과 한국의 언어 제국주의적 경향으로 인한 제약을 어떻게 극복하고 있는지 고찰한다. 이를 통해 남미 출신 한인들의 초국가적 이주 양상과 초국가적 주체로서의 행위성, 그리고 한국에 존재하는 외국어 생태계 내 식민주의적 시선에 대한 비판적 시사점을 얻을 수 있을 것이다.
