Counseling is the process of facilitating a client’s insights and helping him/her gain self-understanding. It is the counselor’s understanding for a client that must be premised if we say the successful result of the counseling is to reach the client’s self-understanding. When the counselor’s proper understanding is communicated to the client, the client feels that his/her context is understood after then. This experience gives the client the opportunity to gain insights into his/her distress. Therefore, the counselors face the question, ‘How can I understand the client well?’. However, before we contemplate how to understand well, what should be questioned is ‘What is understanding itself?’. It is difficult to understand well without knowing what understanding means. This study attempts to clarify the nature of understanding through the consideration of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics and apply it to counseling. Counseling is the process of creating a shared understanding by fusion of horizons. Counseling takes the form of a dialectical dialogue comprised of questions and answers between a counselor and a client. This study proposes the following four aspects of counselors who put hermeneutic understanding into practice based on philosophical hermeneutics. First, the counselor should participate in the experience of counseling to practice understanding, interpretation and application for the client’s text. Second, the counselor must be open to accept a transformation of his/her own horizon. Third, the counselor should be able to sensitively capture the negativity emerging from the client’s text and return it a question related to the client’s insight. Last, the counselor should help the client find the meaning of his/her own pain and suffering by interpreting the client’s incomprehensible distress in an appropriate and pertinent words.

본 연구는 한스 게오르크 가다머의 철학적 해석학에 대한 고찰을 토대로 이해의 본성 을 밝히고 이를 상담에 적용해 사유해보려는 목적을 지닌다. 상담은 내담자의 내적 통찰 을 촉진하고 자기이해를 돕는 과정이며 상담자는 이 과정의 조력자로서 내담자를 동반 한다. 이때 내담자의 자기이해를 위해 전제되어야 하는 것은 내담자에 대한 상담자의 온 전한 이해이다. 상담자의 ‘제대로’된 이해가 내담자에게 전달될 때 내담자는 자신과 그 삶의 맥락이 이해받았음을 느끼며 이러한 경험을 통해 비로소 자신의 고통을 통찰할 수 있는 계기를 갖게 된다. 따라서 상담자가 타자로서의 내담자에 대한 이해를 잘 할 수 있는 방법론을 고심해야 하지만, 이에 앞서 좀더 근원적 차원에서 ‘과연 이해란 무엇인가?’, ‘진정한 이해를 실천하는 상담자는 어떤 존재인가?’라는 질문을 제기해 볼 필요가 있다. 가다머의 철학적 해석학의 관점에서 보자면, 내담자에 대한 상담자의 이해는 내담자 를 단순히 하나의 대상으로 인식하는 데에 그치는 것이 아니다. 내담자에 대한 ‘제대로’ 된 이해는 상담자가 상담이라는 경험의 장에 자신을 기꺼이 내어놓음으로써 스스로 개시되고, 나아가 내담자의 지평과의 지속적인 만남을 거듭함으로써 함께 변화되는 과정 이라고 할 수 있다. 이 때 상담은 상담자와 내담자가 상호적으로 나누는 물음과 답변의 변 증법적 대화가 된다. 본 연구에서는 가다머의 철학적 해석학에 근거하여 해석학적 이해를 실천하는 상담 자의 모습을 다음의 네 가지 차원으로 제안한다. 첫째, 상담자는 내담자의 텍스트를 이해 하고 해석하고 적용하는 이해의 당사자이며 참여자이다. 둘째, 상담자는 자신의 지평의 변형을 기꺼이 감수하며 이를 위해 자신을 열어두어야 한다. 셋째, 상담자는 내담자의 텍스트로부터 부각되는 부정성을 민감하게 포착하고 이를 내담자의 통찰과 직결되는 질문으로 되돌려 줄 수 있어야 한다. 넷째, 내담자의 이해될 수 없는 고통을 ‘적절하고’, ‘알맞은’ 언어로 해석하여 돌려줌으로써 내담자 스스로 자신이 처한 고통의 의미를 찾을 수 있 도록 조력해야 한다.
