Makuranososi is a representative woman essay in the Heian Age of Japan, in which many things directly experienced by the writer Seisyonagon are described in detail with keen senses. And the essay has a great material value, let alone a literary value. This paper was studied on the examples connected with the ‘snow’ seen in Makuranososi. The examples of fifty-four words of snow are seen in this essay. These examples are numerous compared with those of other diaries or essays in the Heian Age. Seisyonagon expressed in this essay frankly and delicately her feelings of snow and described exceedingly in detail many things connected with the snow which she directly experienced. Makuranoshi and Heian period diaries depict enjoying the white snow scenery in the court garden in winter. Such customs were established as "Yukimi," a custom of holding banquets while enjoying the scenery of snow, especially the scenery of the first snow, and continued through the Middle Ages to the modern era. Makuranososi records that they made a mountain of big snow with snow on a snowy day and enjoyed it for a long time, and describes the customs of visitors on snowy days. This essay details Yukimi, who appreciates snow in winter, when there are few things to see, and the scenery of making mountains with snow. Therefore, you can get a glimpse of the play, culture, and awareness of the eyes that Kyoto's nobles enjoyed in the court at that time. In addition, “Makuranososhi” describes in detail the beauty of the color contrasting with the white of the snow as if it were drawn in a picture, so it is valuable as a document showing the culture of the time.

『마쿠라노소시』는 일본 헤이안시대를 대표하는 여류수필로, 작자인 세이쇼나곤이 직접 겪은 수많은 일들에 대해 날카로운 감각으로 상세히 기술하고 있어 문학적인 가치 는 물론, 당시 문화와 시대상을 보여주는 자료로서의 가치도 크다고 인정받고 있다. 본 논문은 헤이안시대의 겨울 정취 중 특히 눈과 관련된 문화와 사람들의 인식에 대해 이해하기 위해, 『마쿠라노소시』에 보이는 ‘雪’에 관한 용례를 고찰한 것이다. 『마쿠라노 소시』에는 54개의 ‘雪’이라는 용례가 보이며, 이는 헤이안시대 다른 수필이나 일기류와 비교해도 용례가 탁월하게 많은 편이라고 할 수 있다. 용례가 많은 것뿐만이 아니고 세이 쇼나곤은 일상 속에서 겪은 눈에 대한 경험을 솔직하고 세밀하게 표현하고 있다. 『마쿠라노소시』와 헤이안시대 일기류에는 겨울에 궁중의 정원에 하얗게 쌓인 눈경 치를 함께 감상하며 즐기는 모습이 잘 그려져 있다. 그런 풍습이 눈경치, 특히 첫 눈의 경 치를 즐기며 연회를 여는 풍습인 ‘유키미’로 정착되게 되고 이후 중세를 거쳐 근세시대 까지 계속되게 되었다. 또한 『마쿠라노소시』에는 눈이 많이 내린 날 눈을 가지고 큰 눈의 산을 만들어 오랫동 안 보고 즐겼다는 기록이 나오며, 특히 눈오는 날 방문하는 사람의 풍류 등이 기술되어 있 다. 볼거리가 드문 겨울에 눈을 감상하는 유키미와 눈으로 산을 만들며 즐기는 풍경 등을 상세하게 기록되어 있어, 당시 교토의 귀족들이 궁중에서 눈을 즐겼던 유희 및 문화와 눈 에 대한 인식의 한 단면을 엿볼 수 있다. 그리고 『마쿠라노소시』에는 흰 색의 눈과 대비된 보라색, 붉은 색 등의 옷 색깔의 아 름다움에 대해 반복적으로 기술하고 있다. 이는 헤이안시대 다른 일기들에서도 볼 수 있 는 경향이며 옷이나 장신구류에 대해 자세히 색감과 문양, 재질 등에 대해 묘사했던 당시 문헌들의 특징이 잘 나타나있는 것으로 볼 수 있다.
