The present study was aimed at analyzing the aesthetic meaning and va lues which ‘Danballyeongmanggeumgang’ painted by Gyeomjae Jeongseon has in many different perspectives, to find out the special reasons there of because he painted many different pieces of Peak Danballyeong despit e the fact that many artists both in the late Joseon Dynasty and moder n times have painted a number of pieces with the theme of Peak Danbal lyeong. Peak Danballyeong was not just a concept of crossing to go up to Mt. Geumgang, but a place which played a role as a historical threshold that became a mental comfort for Crown Prince Maui so that he could resolve his hardships and problems and as a religious gateway as well because t hey could leave the secular world and enter the Buddhist one if they bo bbed hair. Especially, the reason why ‘Danballyeongmanggeumgang’ paint ed by Jeongseon has been valued highly is because it has contained man y aesthetic values in it, when compared to other works. His real landsca pe style of painting had such a great influence on the later generations because it fused the aesthetic structure element with the non-aesthetic one as motives of the piece. ‘Danballyeongmanggeumgang’ had a comman d of three-perspective method properly and by using the diagonal compos ition expressed close view of Peak Danballyeong greatly and in detail in the right bottom of the piece. And the sense of distance between Peak Danballyeong and Mt. Geumgang was depicted so well, because the artist left a blank space in the center of the work while placing Mt. Geumgang in the left top. Moreover, small depiction of a party of a nobleman as st affage in the highest point of Peak Danballeong and the expression of a horse carriage and some men in the middle point of a ridge let us know that Peak Danballeong was an important passage to Mt. Geumgang in those times. It is thought by the writer that Artist Jeongseon has had a great influence on the history of Korean paintings and that the painting has a significance in that it melted many aesthetic values such as history, religion, art, etc. in the piece beyond the concept of geographical plac eness thereof which could let the viewers see Mt. Geumgang in one piece ‘Danballyeongmanggeumgang’.

본 연구는 조선 후기와 근대 작가들이 단발령을 소재로 한 그림을 많이 그렸음 에도 겸재 정선이 단발령 작품을 여러 점이나 그린 것에서 특별한 이유를 찾기 위해 <단발령망금강> 작품이 갖는 미적 의미와 가치를 여러 관점으로 분석한 것이다. 단발령은 단순히 금강산을 가기 위한 건널목의 개념이 아니라 어려운 일, 힘든 일도 해소할 수 있는 마의태자의 심적 위안이 되었던 역사적 문지방 역할과 머리를 자 르면 속세를 벗어나 불교계에 입문할 수 있다는 종교적 관문 역할을 하였던 곳이다. 특 히 정선의 <단발령망금강>이 다른 작품에 비해 그 가치를 높이 평가받는 것은 작품에 많은 미적 가치를 함유하고 있기 때문이다. 작품동인으로서 미적 구성요소와 비미적 (非美的) 요소를 융합한 그의 진경화풍은 후대에도 많은 영향을 미쳤다. <단발령망금 강>은 삼원법을 적절히 구사하고 대각선구도를 사용하여 오른편 하단에는 근경의 단발 령을 크고 자세히 표현하였고, 왼편 상단에 금강산을 배치하면서 화면 중간은 여백 처 리하여 단발령과 금강산의 거리감을 매우 잘 표현했다. 또한 단발령 고갯마루에 점경 인물로 작게 묘사한 선비 일행과 고개 중간의 마차와 사람 여럿을 표현한 것은 단발령 이 당시 금강산의 주요 통로임을 알게 한다. 정선이 한국회화사에 미친 영향도 대단하 지만 <단발령망금강산> 의 한 작품에서 금강산을 바라볼 수 있는 지리위치적 장소성의 개념을 넘어 역사성, 종교성, 예술성 등 많은 미적 가치를 녹여냈다는 점도 매우 의미 있다고 본다.
