The classical Korean films are being saved and restored than ever before for the appreciation of 100 years of history. The digitally archived films are now available on YouTube, the global online streaming platform. Then, the subtitles of these films are retranslated due to the fact that the screening media was changed and the original subtitles were removed or lost. The aim of this research is to establish whether any subtitling translation strategy can be detected in the way culture is retransmitted through the YouTube channel. Therefore, the study analyzes the subtitling translation strategies of culture specific terms implemented with factors unique to digital media as well as those for this particular genre of film focused on the ‘Insect Woman’, one of the classical Korean films produced in the 1970s and directed by Kim Ki-young. The development of subtitling norms would help achieve greater exposure and popularization of classical Korean films. Therefore, the purpose of subtitles should not merely be to help the understanding of the plot but rather to give an exploration through the authentic verbal depiction of foreign cultures.

    학문으로서의 번역에 대한 관심은 20세기 후반에 들어서면서 부터 본격화되기 시작하여 그 연구 범위와 대상에 대해 다양한 논의가 이루어졌습니다. 특히 1970년대 이후 기술적 번역학(Descriptive Translation Studies)의 기치아래 규범성(prescription)의 틀을 벗어나 기술 중심으로 연구의 무게가 옮겨가면서 원천 텍스트 중심의 등가성(equivalence)만을 중시하던 관점에서 목표 텍스트 중심의 언어적 · 문화적 그리고 사회적 체제 또는 제도를 고려한 연구로 관심이 옮겨가게 되었습니다. 더욱이 2000년대에 들어서면서 부터는 번역학 연구의 초점이 텍스트 중심의 연구에서 벗어나 번역가의 인지 과정, 번역가의 개입, 번역가의 주관성 등으로 더욱 다양화되고 있습니다. 또한, 급변하는 사회 환경과 세계화의 흐름 속에서 국가 간, 문화 간 교류가 늘어남에 따라 언어적 장벽을 뛰어넘어 세계와 소통하기 위해 실무 번역에 대한 수요가 급증하고 있습니다. 이러한 학문적 흐름과 사회적 요구에 발맞추어 국내 번역학 연구의 학문적 발전에 기여하고, 전문화된 번역실무 서비스를 제공하기 위한 목적으로 동국대학교 번역학 연구소는 지난 2008년 2월 문을 열었습니다.
