The purpose of this thesis is to examine the films of Catherine Bigelow, an American female film director, and to explore and articulate how her films work. First of all, we look at the characteristics of the characters with their place/role in the narrative which is universally revealed in Catherine Bigelow's work. Arming the points, this thesis further discusses the ideology that Catherine Bigelow constantly advocates in her films. This would then this research considers the handheld as a way to facilitate and work by means of physical implement through Bigelow’s films. Based on the aforementioned concepts and approaches, this thesis explores how Catherine Bigelow's handheld is constructed and works centered on the film while examining the final explosive dismantling scene shot-by-shot. It also looks at how fast-rhythmic editing can be combined with handheld shots as a secondary means. As a result, it was argued that the appearance of the character in a state of tension and the ideology of defending the right to self-defense are the characteristics and philosophy that permeate the Bigelow’s movie. And the most essential method for realizing it in the work is handheld shooting and rapid editing. Using the case of the representative work , it was investigated that the handheld method encompasses the ‘physical tension’ created by the shaking screen as well as the ‘sensation as an emotion’ felt by the character. It is expected that this study will serve as a touchstone for the follow-up researches to develop/facilitate the principles and effectiveness of the concepts and handheld method penetrating the approach and style of Bigelow’s films. This study largely agrees with the study of Jang Seo-bung and Yang Yun-ho (2021), and this study also presupposes that Catherine Beagle's “Hurt Locker” is used as an important analysis tool. However, it is different from the way Jang Seo-bung and Yang Yun-ho developed the discussion, that is, from the big premise, explanation, and definition of hand hel, they narrow down to an individual work called “Hurt Rocker” and argue.

이 연구는 미국의 여성 영화감독인 캐서린 비글로우의 영화를 살펴보고 그의 영화가 어떤 방식으로 작동하는지를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 캐서린 비글로우의 작품 전반에 보편적으로 드러나는 캐릭터의 특성과 그들이 내러티브 안에서 위치하는 지점을 우선 살펴보고, 캐서린 비글로우가 자신의 영화에서 끊임없이 주창하는 이데올로기에 대해 논의한 후 그것을 물리적으로 구현하는 스타일로서의 핸드헬드에 대해 논한다. 이를 위해 가장 중요하게 언급되는 영화는 <허트 로커>인데 이 영화의 마지막 폭발물 해체 장면을 샷 단위로 살펴보면서 캐서린 비글로우의 핸드헬드가 어떻게 구성되고 작동하는지를 논의한다. 또한 보조적 수단으로 빠른 리듬의 편집이 핸드헬드 샷과 어떻게 결합하는지도 살펴본다. 그 결과 긴장 상태에 놓여있는 캐릭터의 등장과 자위권 옹호 이데올로기가 비글로우 영화를 관통하는 특징과 철학임을 주장하였다. 또한 그것을 작품에 실체적으로 구현하는 방법에 있어서 가장 핵심적인 방식은 핸드헬드 촬영과 빠른 편집이며 그 핸드헬드의 방식이 흔들리는 화면이 만들어내는 화면상의 ‘물리적 긴장감’에 더해 캐릭터가 느끼는 ‘감정으로서의 긴장감’까지 포괄하고 있음을 <허트 로커>라는 대표 작품의 사례를 들어 규명하였다. 이 연구가 비글로우 영화에 관한 접근 및 스타일을 관통하는 방법론과 핸드헬드 방식의 원리 및 그 효용성을 강화하기 위한 후속 연구에 있어 초석으로 작용하길 기대한다. 이 연구에서는 선행연구 중 장서붕과 양윤호의 연구(2021)에 상당 부분 동의하며, 본 연구 역시 캐서린 비글로우의 <허트 로커>가 중요한 분석 도구로 사용된다는 점에서 유사성을 가진다는 점을 전제한다. 그러나 장서붕과 양윤호가 취했던 논의 전개 방식, 즉 핸드헬드에 대한 큰 전제와 설명, 정의로부터 <허트 로커>라는 개별작품으로 좁혀 들어가 논증하는 방식과는 궤를 달리하고자 한다.
