One of the most important topics of the 21st Century is “culture.” Since the late 20th Century, Korean churches have analyzed various cultural trends and utilized popular cultural forms for the purpose of delivering the gospel. This article starts from the question whether utilizing the forms of culture can be a means of practicing cultural evangelism or mission. There are theological issues in that the appropriation of the cultural forms examine neither the cultural background nor the original intentions of those cultural forms. Thus, this study tries to define forming a cultural relationship between Christian culture and other cultures as Christian evangelism. In detail, this article examines the concept of the “cultural mission” which has provided the conceptual background of Korean churches’ appropriation of cultural forms from the perspective of Paul Tillich’s theology of culture. It also presents the practical limits of the biased character of cultural evangelism. Then, this study proposes the formation of the hybrid cultural relationship as an alternative way of practicing Christian evangelism and mission culturally. Homi Bhabha’s theory of Cultural Hybridity and Robert Young’s theory of Cultural Translation provide a theoretical ground from which this article explores how the hybrid cultural relationship can be formed. Lastly, this article proposes how the concept of the hybrid cultural relationship can revise the cultural mission theory and how one can practice Christian evangelism within the relationship.

한국어

21세기 한국 기독교 목회와 신학 교육에 있어 가장 중요한 주제 중 하나는 문화일 것이다. 특히 20세기 말부터 한국교회는 한국 사회의 문화적 현상을 분석하고, 유행하 는 문화 형식을 차용하는 것이 복음을 전하는 데에 효과적인 방법이라 여겨왔다. 본 논문은 이와 같이 실용주의에 근거하여 문화의 형식만을 유용하는 것이 과연 진정한 의미의 문화적 전도 혹은 선교를 실천하는 것이라 할 수 있는지에 대한 질문을 시작 점으로 한다. 문화 형식의 유용은 그 형식이 만들어진 문화적 배경을 진지하게 고민 하지 않았다는 점에서, 또 그 형식을 만든 원작자들의 의도를 검토하지 않았다는 점 에서 신학적인 고찰의 여지를 남긴다. 이에 본 논문은 기독교 문화와 그 외의 문화가 형식의 유용이 아닌 문화적 교류의 장을 형성하는 것 자체가 기독교 전도임을 실천신 학적 관점에서 정의하려 한다. 구체적으로는 한국교회의 문화 형식 유용의 배경이 되었던 “문화선교”의 개념을 Paul Tillich의 문화 신학적 관점에서 살펴보고, 편향적인 성향을 띄게 된 문화적 전도 혹은 선교의 실천적 한계를 제시하려 한다. 이어 이러한 한계를 넘어설 수 있는 대안 으로 혼종적 문화 관계의 형성을 문화적 전도의 실천 방향으로 제안할 것이다. 특히 Homi Bhabha의 문화 혼종 이론과 Robert Young의 문화 번역 이론을 중심으로 혼종 적 문화 관계가 어떻게 형성되는지, 그 안에서 기독교의 복음이 어떻게 전달될 수 있 는지를 살펴봄으로 문화선교운동을 개선한 문화적 전도를 소개하며 논문을 마치려 한다.
