The church has historically developed architecture suitable for different religious communities under the deep influence of local culture. Church architecture reflects not only religious precepts but also the technical developments available at the time of design. This thesis introduces, analyzes, and suggests trends within modern church architecture with a focus on the relationship between church architecture and culture. The Gothic revival’s pursuit of aesthetics and Modernist efforts toward functionality have had an enormous influence on modern church architecture. Kenneth Frampton uses the term “Critical Regionalism” to describe a harmony between global universality and regional specificity. Among the issues the church faces today are post-Christianism, the expansion of cyberspace, and the widespread adoption of digital media. Church architecture today should acknowledge and respond to these societal changes. In particular, the architecture of the Korean Protestant Church should reconsider its theological and liturgical homogeneity to pursue harmony between functionality and aesthetics, universality and specificity. Churches have two divergent architectural responsibilities: to welcome the outside public and avoid rigidity, but also to differentiate themselves as churches from other buildings. In addition, they should serve the local community and protect the environment. Moreover, inculturated church architecture styles and democratized spaces are necessary elements of churches in the future. The writer also recommends an embracing perspective toward new platforms provided by the Internet and digital media. In conclusion, church architecture responds closely to the standards and demands of culture but is also accountable for differentiating the identity of churches from other buildings. The writer looks forward to a new church architecture that naturally embodies values such as inclusiveness and hospitality, humility and humbleness, beauty and holiness.

교회는 문화의 깊은 영향속에서 각 신앙공동체에 어울리는 건축을 만들어왔다. 교회 건축은 교단적 특성뿐만 아니라 시대적 배경이 되는 사상과 기술문명과도 깊이 연관된다. 이 논문은 그러한 교회건축과 문 화의 관계 속에서 현대 교회 건축의 경향을 서술하고 분석하며 제안하 는 내용을 담고 있다. 현대 교회 건축에서 심미성을 추구하는 고딕부흥과 기능성을 강조 하는 모더니즘의 영향은 지대하다. 더불어 Kenneth Frampton이 주장 한 비판적 지역주의(Critical Regionalism)는 세계적인 보편성과 지역 성 특수성의 조화라는 가치를 강조한다. 현재 교회는 탈기독교현상과 사이버 공간의 확대, 그리고 디지털 미디어의 광범위한 보급이라는 현상에 직면했다. 교회 건축은 이러한 변화를 감안해야 할 것이다. 특 별히 한국개신교회 건축은 지금까지 부족했던 신학적, 예전적 다양성 을 고려할 필요가 있으며 기능성과 심미성, 보편성과 특수성의 조화 를 추구해야 할 것이다. 교회 건축은 현대사회가 요구하는 공공성을 구현하고 좀 더 유연하고 개방적인 입장을 견지하되 교회로서의 차별 성을 유지해야 하는 이중적인 과제를 안고 있다. 더불어 지역사회를 섬기고 환경을 보호할 의무도 갖는다. 한국적인 교회건축을 향한 노력도 필요하며 탈중앙적 가치관을 거스르지 않도록 공간의 민주화도 고려해야 한다. 온라인이라는 새로운 플랫폼에 대한 전향적인 접근도 요구된다. 결론적으로 교회 건축은 문화와 밀접한 관련을 갖되, 교회로서의 정 체성을 유지해야 하는 이중적 속성을 갖는다. 포용과 환대, 겸손과 절 제, 아름다움과 거룩함과 같은 가치들이 자연스럽게 구현된 교회 건축 을 기대한다.
