“Children’s Chosun Ilbo”(1937.1.10.-1940.8.10.) is a weekly children's newspaper published by the Chosun Ilbo during the Japanese colonial period. This article aims to examine the appearance of children in the media space at the end of the 1930s through newspaper photos of “Children’s Chosun Ilbo”. First, the places where children appeared the most in the pictorial were the zoo and botanical gardens, followed by kindergartens and schools. In these spaces of reproduction, children were sometimes imaged as small and cute animals and plants, and they were also given social identity as students. However, the daily life of children reproduced mainly in cities and schools has an aspect that obscures the reality of child labor from view and simplifies various aspects of the children of the time. Second, in the news reports, children often appeared as geniuses with extraordinary abilities, dedicated and humane heroes, and poor and pitiful orphans. At this time, the photos were effective in giving reality to the stories of the characters and triggering the emotional reaction of the reader. In addition, children's newspapers repeatedly showed cute and lovable images of world-famous children's stars, such as Dionne Quintuplets in Canada or Shirley Temple in the United States. Third, since the end of the 1930s was a time of World War II, the photos were also used to convey war news around the world. The war was lightly sketched with romantic images of children and failed to adequately translate and deliver the information children needed. The modern romantic ideology of children had no choice but to expose its structural weakness in the face of militaristic violence that tried to mobilize even the growth of children in war.

『소년조선일보』(1937.1.10.-1940.8.10.)는 일제강점기에 조선일보사가 발행한 주간 어린이신문이다. 이 논문은 『소년조선일보』의 신문사진을 통해 1930년대 말 근대 미디어 공간에서 어린이의 이미지가 어떻게 나타났는지 살펴보았다. 첫째, 신문의 사진 화보에서 어린이의 모습이 가장 많이 등장한 장소는 동·식물원이었 으며, 그 다음은 유치원과 학교였다. 이러한 장소에서 어린이들은 작고 귀여운 동·식물로 이미지화되기도 했으며, 학생으로서의 사회적 정체성을 부여받기도 했다. 그러나 도시와 학교를 중심으로 재현된 이와 같은 어린이의 일상은, 아동 노동 등의 가혹한 현실 문제를 시야에서 가리고 당대 어린이들의 삶을 단순하게 바라보게 만드는 측면이 있었다. 둘째, 신문의 뉴스 보도에서 어린이들은 비범한 능력을 지닌 천재, 헌신적이며 인간미넘치는 영웅, 가난하고 불우한 고아의 유형으로 자주 등장했다. 이때 사진은 인물들의 사 연에 사실감을 부여하면서, 독자들의 감정적 반응을 유도했다. 한편 국외 뉴스에서는 캐나 다의 다섯 쌍둥이나 미국의 셜리 템플처럼 세계적인 어린이 스타들의 모습이 반복적으로 등장했다. 사진의 대량 복제 기술은 귀엽고 사랑스럽게 연출된 어린이의 정형적 이미지를 대중에게 각인시키는 효과가 있었다. 셋째, 1930년대 말은 제2차 세계대전이 벌어지고 있던 때였던 만큼 사진은 전쟁 관련 뉴스를 전달하는 데도 빈번하게 활용되었다. 그런데 『소년조선일보』에서 전쟁 지역의 어 린이 사진은 대개 전쟁의 분위기를 가볍고 사소하게 스케치하는 데 활용되었다. 천진하고 순수한 어린이의 이미지는 전쟁의 폭력성을 희석하고 미화하는 데 기여했으며, 정작 어린 이 독자들에게 유의미한 정보를 적절히 번역하여 전달하는 데는 이바지하지 못했다. 어린 이에 대한 근대의 낭만적 이데올로기 혹은 합의된 지식은, 어린이의 성장마저도 전쟁의 자원으로 삼고자 했던 군국주의 폭력 앞에서 그 구조적 취약함을 노출할 수밖에 없었던 것이다.
