In this paper I analyze the concrete idea of Rousseau's education focusing on his Emile. The goal of education in Emile is to achieve education that makes Emile remain as a citizen of liberty & equally. At first, for achieving this, we will look at concepts such as self-love, sympathy, amour de soi and amour-propre which were regarded as important by Rousseau. Self-love is the first motive for the civil consciousness. It makes that consciousness sustainable. Next, we will examine the Rousseau's methods for improving personality that he presented as educational ones. He wanted to enhance consciousness to recover goodness in the original human being by the method of civil education. Consciousness can control passions. In conclusion, I argue that the role of citizenship education based on consciousness should be considered seriously in our grasp of the current problems of society and suggest specific characteristics of good personalilty.

스스로를 신뢰하며 어려움을 극복해가는 에너지의 바탕이 되는 자기 애를 가져야 함과 동시에 타인에게 해를 끼치는 이기적인 자존심이 되 지 않도록 자신의 정념을 제어하고 사회적 존재로서의 자신을 인식하 면서 자신의 말과 행위에 대한 책임감을 지녀야 한다. 그러한 책임감 의 바탕은 자기애에서 비롯된 양심에 기초한다. 루소에게 있어 양심은 사적 존재로서의 인간과 공동체 속의 사회적 존재로서의 시민이 조화 될 수 있는 근거이자, 또한 다름 아닌 자기애의 발전 형태라는 것을 보여주었다. 마지막으로 본고에서는 절제에 바탕을 둔 예의, 약속과 신 뢰의 문제, 남용하지 않는 자유와 행함, 공감에 토대를 둔 소통 능력 강화를 통해 정념을 제어함으로써 인간은 자신을 위한 존재인 동시에 타인과 상호작용하는 시민이 될 수 있음을 제안하였다.
