This essay starts from my critical idea that in current elementary moral textbooks remain the faint vestiges of past authoritarian education unliquidated. And then it indicates the four types of authoritarian contents visible in four textbooks for children from the third grade to the sixth grade, and highlights the necessity of steadily correcting them according to our democratic spirit of the age. Those four types are ‘frequent appearance of hierarchical and unilateral virtues’, ‘idealization of submissive spirit and withering of critical mind’, ‘conventionalized authority of amoral virtues’, and ‘national bias of unification education’, respectively. It is my basic conception of moral education as ‘philosophical personality education’ that underlies those critical arguments. This essay emphasizes that only if we try to form and protect such a public good sense of the ‘same-rootedness of moral and philosophy’, we could effectively weaken the conventionalized influence of authoritarian education left by our dark past.

이 글은 오늘날 초등 도덕 수업에 사용되는 국정 교과서에 여태껏 청산되지 못한 과거 권위주의 교육의 잔영이 희미하게 남아 있다는 문 제의식에서 출발한다. 그리고는 초등 3-6학년용 4개 교과서에 나타난 그 권위주의 요소들을 네 가지로 유형화해 적시한 후 그것들을 민주적 인 시대정신에 맞도록 바로잡아 나가야 할 필요성을 제기한다. 그 네 가지 유형에는 ‘수직적ㆍ위계적ㆍ비대칭적 덕목들의 건재’, ‘미화된 순 응과 실종된 비판’, ‘무도덕적 덕목들의 관성화된 권위’, ‘통일 교육의 일방주의’ 등이 포함된다. 이러한 비판적 논변의 밑바탕이 된 것은 도 덕 교육에 관한 논자의 기본 구상인 ‘철학적 인격 교육’ 개념이다. 이 글은 그와 같은 ‘도덕과 철학의 공속성’에 관한 공공의 양식을 싹틔우 고 지켜 갈 때에만 어두웠던 과거가 남긴 권위주의 교육의 관성화된 영향력도 실효적으로 줄여 갈 수 있음을 강조한다.
