Many of W. B. Yeats’s poems deal with Utopia. His life was filled with suffering. He did not win the love of Maud Gonne whom he followed almost the half of his life. He also saw the political and religious division of Ireland in which the two opposing forces fiercely fought against each other. When he grew old, he found himself faced with the problem of birth, aging, sickness and death. He envisioned the world of Utopia in an attempt to heal his agony. His life, in a sense, reflects the picture of human lives. He wrote that the responsibility of an artist was to lead people from tragedy to Utopia. What does the poet mean by Utopia? His Utopia has nothing to do with the physical concept of a happy place. It has more to do with the power of thought, the process of thinking, the power of imaginative creation and the power of meditation. It is the mental power which the poet calls Utopia.

예이츠의 시는 유토피아를 찾는 내용이 많다. 자신의 삶이 고통스러웠 음을 반증한다. 그는 개인적으로는 반평생 쫓아다닌 모드곤의 사랑을 얻지 못했고 사 회적으로는 정치적, 종교적으로 갈라진 아일랜드가 늘 서로 싸우고 헐뜯고 비난하는 세상을 경험했다. 그러다가 나이가 드니 또 다른 형태의 고통인 생로병사의 문제점에 직면한다. 그때마다 그의 시는 유토피아를 향한다. 늘 고통 속에서 몸부림 쳤던 시인 의 생은 어쩌면 보편적인 인간의 모습이기도 하다. 예이츠는 예술가의 임무는 비극 속 에 신음하는 인간을 유토피아로 인도하는 것이라고 했다. 그가 말하는 유토피아는 결 국 무엇을 의미하는가? 시인의 유토피아는 결코 물질적인 장소의 개념이 아니다. 시인 은 자신의 마음 깊숙이 존재하는 생각, 사고의 프로세스, 자유롭게 상상하는 힘, 죽은 자에게 생명을 불어넣는 예술적 창조의 힘, 그리고 명상의 힘이라고 말한다. 시인에게 는 그 정신적인 힘 그 자체가 유토피아이다.
