Impersonality is an exercise on the part of an artist to bring about the truth of the experience. Such a truthful experience contains within both reality and beauty. In the capacity of being ‘real,’ we can understand that the impersonal experience acquires fullness and totality whereas its status as beautiful suggests a greater degree of comprehensiveness. T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats and John Keats have devised ‘mechanism of sensibility’ to bring to art by having ‘gathered’ into the art, all the significance of human life. In each of these great poets, the process of depersonalization is ultimately underlain in the way in which appearance and reality are distinguished thus Eliot equates the ordinary level experience with fragmentation, anarchy and irregularity while in Yeats the same experience that emerges at the ordinary level is antithetical. Keats, on the other hand, will locate the ordinary experience with those events and situations of life where indulgence is held at its maximum. As a remedy to these indistinct appearances deferring the emergence of totality, Eliot, Yeats and Keats propose ‘depersonalization,’ ‘Unity of Being’ and ‘negative capability’ being the assured measures to bring to realization the truth’ of experience.
