Mencius 1A7 has been studied in the context of the origination and the expansion of compassion. However, it seems Mengzi goes in deeper than the impulses of benevolence in this passage. He offers a circumstance where one has the motive to practice benevolence or compassion, but has difficulty putting it into action. The focus of this passage is how to overcome the obstacle and preserve one’s benevolence. This passage presents three dilemmatic situations. A. The King’s decision to save the bull is not easily compatible with the consecration ceremony; B. The gentleman’s pity for the sacrificed animal is not easily compatible with sacrificial rites or meat eating; C. Protection of one’s people is not easily compatible with the King’s great ambition to rule all China. In all these circumstances it seems the person in question must discard one of two incompatible choices one of which is one’s compassion. However, Mengzi offers the craft of benevolence or benevolence government as a solution to the dilemma and a method for preserving one’s sense of compassion. His solution coincides exactly with other passages in the Mencius where Mengzi examines the significance of wisdom. It corresponds, for example, to 4A27 where wisdom allows one to grasp the realities of benevolence and righteousness and not forgo them; or 4A1 where wisdom enables the ruler to show grace towards the people without fail through benevolence. All in all, it may be concluded that Mencius 1A7 is a passage illustrating Mengzi’s practical wisdom for overcoming obstacles and putting one’s benevolence into action.

『맹자』 「양혜왕상」 7은 동정심과 동정심의 확장 등의 주제를 중심으로 연구되어 왔다. 그러나 필자는 이 장에서 맹자는 이런 주제 말고도 또 다른 주제를 다루고 있다고 생각한다. 맹자는 이 장에서 인 또는 동정심을 실천할 동기가 있지만, 동정심의 실천에 어려움을 느끼는 상황을 제시하고 이를 극복하는 방법에 관해 논하고 있다. 이 장에서 맹자는 딜레마처럼 보이는 세 상황을 제시했다. 제선왕이 소를 살리려고 하는 일은 흔종과 양립하기 어렵고, 군자가 희생물에 대해 갖는 동정심은 희생제의와 육식과 양립하기 어렵고, 백성을 보호하는 일과 제선왕의 바람은 양립하기 어렵다. 이 상황 모두에서 행위자는 동정심을 느끼면서도 이를 그대로 실천할 때 다른 한쪽을 저버리는 선택을 할 수밖에 없는 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 맹자는 딜레마를 해소하고 동정심을 보존하는 방법으로 인술(仁術) 또는 인정(仁政)을 제시한다. 이 방법은 맹자가 다른 곳에서 지혜를 거론했던 대목과 정확히 일치한다. 예컨대 인과 의의 실제를 알고 이를 저버리지 않도록 해 주는 지혜[智](「이루상」 27)나 통치자가 인한 마음을 가졌음에도 백성에게 은혜를 베푸는 데 실패하지 않고, 실제로 백성에게 은혜를 베풀 수 있게 해 주는 지혜(「이루상」 1)에 상응한다. 이를 종합해 보면, 맹자는 이 장에서 인한 마음을 실천으로 옮길 때 만날 수 있는 어려움을 극복하는, 즉 인의 실천을 위한 맹자식의 실천적 지혜를 거론하고 있다고 평가할 수 있다.
