Noemug Cheoyeong made a remarkable achievement as a general of monk soldiers. As a result, Cheoyeong was revered as ‘Venerable Monk who Helped the World’ by future generations, and also enjoyed the honor of being enshrined together with Hyujeong and Yujeong at Pyochungsa Temple in Haenam and Suchungsa Temple in Myohyangsan. Unfortunately, however, we do not even have information about the year of his birth and death. This paper was written for the purpose of examining the life of Cheoyeong and raising the problem of the Siege of Haengju-related data, which are too centered on ‘Kwon-yul’. In this paper, based on the newly discovered data, Cheoyeong’s activities in 1569 (2nd year of King Seonjo) could be confirmed, and the possibility that he survived until the 1630s was carefully suggested. In the mid to late 16th century, Cheoyeong actively interacted with famous writers based in the Honam region. After the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, he had carried out his activities as a general of monk soldiers, such as the Siege of Haengju and the construction of Gyoryongsanseong Fortress (蛟龍山城). This paper suggests the view that a more rigorous interpretation and evaluation of the Siege of Haengju-related data, which is called ‘Kwon-yul’s urging the soldiers to fight still more vigorously (督戰)’, is required.

뇌묵 처영은 의승장으로 뚜렷한 공적을 남겼다. 그 결과 처영은 후세인들에게 ‘우세존자(佑世尊者)’로 추앙되었으며, 해남 표충사와 묘향산 수충사에 휴정, 유정과 함께 배향되는 영예를 누리기도 하였다. 하지만, 안타깝게도 우리는 그의 생몰연도에 관한 정보조차 갖고 있지 못하다. 이 논문은 처영의 생애를 살펴보고자 하는 목적, 그리고 지나치게 권율 중심으로 기술되어 있는 행주대첩 관련 자료의 문제점을 제기하고자 하는 목적으로 작성되었다. 이 논문에서는 새롭게 발견된 자료를 바탕으로 처영의 1569년(선조 2) 행적을 확인할 수 있었으며, 그가 1630년대까지 생존하였을 가능성도 조심스럽게 제시하였다. 처영은 16세기 중 후반 무렵 호남지역을 기반으로 명성을 떨치던 문인들과 활발하게 교류하였다. 임진란 이후 그는 행주대첩, 교룡산성 수축 등의 뛰어난 의승 활동을 전개하였는데, ‘권율의 독전(督戰)’으로 칭해지는 행주대첩 관련 자료들에 대해서는 보다 엄정한 관점에서의 해석과 평가가 필요하다는 견해를 제시하였다.
