This paper examines Michiko Ishimure’s depiction of Korean atomic bomb victims, as well as Sadako Kurihara’s “When we call it Hiroshima” and “From the Stones.” The “shaped representation of a crow” by the Korean victims, first appearing in the Ishimure’s records, was a picture of a log “crow”, and it inspired Kurihara’s poem “From the Stone.” The representation of “a miserable Korean being eaten by a shaped crow” highlighted the presence of tragic Koreans in Japanese memories of the bombings. The notion of “harm” in war can easily be overlooked in this process. Separating sacrificial memories from their historical context and homogenizing them with abstract pain is risky. As a necessary consequence, we must be wary of standardizing pain while empathizing with the victims’ anguish.
