This paper aims to offer a detailed review of the implication of semantic bleaching for the use of elements that undergo this process. To this end, I make use of data from Spanish and Korean auxiliary verbs. This is because, on the one hand, verbs of this class are typically considered semantically weakened items and, on the other, a crosslinguistic analysis of the two unrelated languages can highlight the background characteristics that those semantically bleached elements show in their similarities and differences. This work shows that, although in distant languages, auxiliar verbs sharing the semantic origin and the current function are closely akin to each other in their behavior regarding grammatical restrictions since they have gone through analogous grammaticalization processes. Then, I argue in favor of the categorical homogeneity for which languages tend to reserve the function of modifying temporal, aspectual and modal denotation of the predicate for auxiliary verbs, even though they have other methods at their disposal. Finally, I discuss how extralinguistic strategies can let unrelated auxiliary verbs of different languages to serve for a same discursive purpose after these items have experienced semantic bleaching.

En este trabajo hacemos una revisión detallada de la implicación que tiene el desgaste semántico con respecto al uso de los elementos que lo sufren. Para ello, nos servimos de los datos recogidos de los verbos auxiliares del español y del coreano. La decisión se debe a que, por una parte, los verbos de esta clase se consideran elementos semánticamente menguados por antonomasia y, por otra, la observación interlingüística de las dos lenguas sin parentesco alguno puede poner de relieve las características globales del comportamiento de los elementos que han pasado por el desgaste semántico en sus similitudes y diferencias. El estudio demuestra que, aunque en lenguas remotas, los verbos auxiliares que comparten el origen semántico y la función actual se comportan de manera análoga ante las restricciones gramaticales porque han seguido procesos de gramaticalización afines. Después, aportamos argumentos a favor de la homogeneidad categorial por la que las lenguas tienden a reservar la función de modificar la denotación temporal, aspectual o modal del predicado para los verbos auxiliares, aun cuando tienen otros recursos a su disposición. Por último, discutimos cómo las estrategias extralingüísticas pueden legitimar que los verbos auxiliares sin parecido semántico sirvan para un mismo fin discursivo en distintas lenguas tras haber pasado por el desgaste semántico.
