This study tried to materialize the public role of religion for the realization of an ideal society from the point of view of the Principle of GongEui. For this, public theology of Volf was discussed from the point of view of Co-righteousness. As one of the public theologians, he already did a lot of research on the social role of religion. As a result, first, the Principle of GongEui cannot be limited to secularism because the public role of religion is the fundamental ideal of all religions. In addition, it was suggested that religion should be the center in the public domain, and efforts should be made to set ethical values, that is, the standard of the public good, and practice public ethics. Second, Volf's analysis of the dysfunction of faith shows that the Principle of GongEui can materialize the public role of religion through the give-and-take action and the four-position foundation of true love that connects God, me(religion), and neighbors (non-religious/other religious people). Third, the Principle of GongEui informed that respect between religions can be achieved and the common good can also be realized when respecting each other and making joint efforts centering on the common goals pursued by religion.

본 연구는 종교의 사회적 역할에 대해 이미 많은 연구를 해온 공공신학자 중 한 사람인 볼프의 공공신학을 공의주의의 관점에서 논의함으로써 이상사회 실현을 위 한 종교의 공적 역할에 대한 논의를 구체화해보고자 하였다. 논의 결과, 첫째, 공의주의는 종교의 공적 역할은 모든 종교의 근본적 이상이기에 세속주의로 제한할 수 없으며 공적 영역에서 종교 역할이 중심이 되어 윤리적 가치 관, 즉 공공선의 기준을 정하고 공공윤리를 실천하고자 노력해야 함을 제시하였다. 둘째, 볼프의 신앙의 기능장애에 대한 분석은 공의주의가 하나님과 나(종교), 이웃 (비종교인/타종교인)으로 연결되는 참사랑의 사위기대와 수수작용으로 종교의 공적 역할을 구체화할 수 있음을 보여주었다. 셋째, 공의주의는 종교가 추구하는 공동의 목표를 중심으로 서로를 존중하고 공동의 노력을 할 때 종교간 존중이 이루어질 수 있으며 공공선 또한 실현될 수 있다는 것을 알려 주었다.
