This paper describes the process used by Olga Petrova (1900-1993) to compile the Description of the Written Heritage of Korean Culture, a catalog of old Korean books held by the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (IOM) in St.Petersburg, which was published in two volumes, in 1956 and 1963. In a 1954 paper Petrova adopted six classifications (language, literature, history, philosophy, law, and references), providing each book’s title, type of edition, year of creation, and number of volumes. By 1954, Petrova had already identified the content and characteristics of most of the old books held by the IOM and had created the classification framework for both volumes of the catalog. For Volume 1 of the Description, Petrova relied on six catalogs and six lists written in Western languages and in Japanese, and on two books written in Korean as references. Among them, Bibliographie Coréenne by M. Courant is the most frequently referenced material in all except two sections of Volume 1; Petrova used this reference to describe 43 old books out of a total of 105—the other two sections mostly contain Japanese old books. The next most referred catalog is 朝鮮圖書解題 (Bibliography of Korean books, 1932), which Petrova used to describe 25 old books included in four sections of the Description. Of the lists, the most referenced materials are 東洋文庫朝鮮本分類目錄 (The list of Korean books held in Toyo Bunko) and 朝鮮書籍目錄 (List of Korean Books). Finally, Petrova’s description of 45 old books provides no references as, 36 of them were not included in any catalogs or lists; thus, Petrova analyzed and described the content of these old books directly.

본 연구는 러시아 한국학자 올가 페트로바가 저술한 상트페테스부르크 동방학연구소 소장 한국 문헌 해제인 『한국 기록문화 유산의 해제』 상권(1956)의 제작 과정과 해제 작성에 활용된 참고문헌을 분야별로 심도 있게 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 본문에서는 먼저 페트로바가 해제 제작 이전인 1954년에 발표한 한국 고서에 대한 논문을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 페트로바가 한국 고서를 여섯 분야로 분류하여 제목, 판종과 창작연도, 권책수를 중심으로 정리하였음을 확인하였다. 그녀가 논문의 발표 시기에 이미 대다수 고서의 내용과 성격을 파악하였으며, 상ㆍ하권 해제의 분류체계의 틀을 작성했음을 알 수 있었다. 상권에 해제의 작성에는 서양어와 일본어로 작성된 해제 6종, 목록 6종과 한글 자료 두 권을 참고문헌으로 활용하였다. 이 가운데 가장 많이 참고된 자료는 쿠랑의 『한국 서지』로 상권 105종 서적 중 43종, 9분야 중 일본 서적 위주인 2분야를 제외한 전 분야의 해제에서 활용되 었음이 확인되었다. 두 번째 주요 참고 자료는 『朝鮮圖書解題』(1932)로 4분야에 25종 서적의 해제에서 사용되 었다. 목록 자료 중에는 『東洋文庫朝鮮本分類目錄』과 『朝鮮書籍目錄』이 가장 많이 참고되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 45종 서적에는 참고문헌이 제시되지 않았는데 그 중 앞 책의 이본과 일본 간행본에 해당하는 자료는 9종이다. 페트로바는 참고문헌에서 확인되지 않은 나머지 서적의 내용을 직접 분석하여 해제를 작성한 것으로 판단된다.
