This is a case study to review the acceptance, awareness, and utilization of Daemyungiltongji in the Joseon dynasty as a part of the study on the book exchange history in East Asia. This book was utilized to influence intellectuals in Joseon in a variety of ways until late Joseon period as a direct motive for compilation and publication of new books upon selection of its pros and cons depending on the situation; as a reference literature to verify the geology of history in Korea and China; as a main source material to prepare the foundation and system of Seowon in 16th century; as a reference to publish the books such as encyclopedia, book collectio, etc.; as a material to verify the boundary of the north to deal with the measures on the national border problem with Qing and strengthen the mind of national defence; and as an information source to expand the world view of intellectuals in Joseon. In particular, the active countermeasures such as new book publications to overcome biased records have the value to pay attention to study the acceptance and modification of the Chinese versions in the Joseon dynasty, rather than staying on the unilateral acceptance or simple critics.

이 글은 동아시아 서적교류사 연구의 일환에서 『대명일통지』의 조선 수용과 인식 및 활용을 밝히고자 한 사례연구이다. 이 책은 조선 지식인들 사이에서 긍정적 또는 부정적 인식이 공존하는 과정에서, 상황에 따라 장단점을 취사선택하여 새로운 서적의 편찬 및 간행을 위한 직접적인 동인으로, 한ㆍ중의 역사지리를 고증하기 위한 전거문헌으로, 16세기에 서원의 설립과 제도를 마련하기 위한 주요한 근거자료로, 類書나 叢書 등의 서적을 편찬하기 위한 참고자료로, 조선후기 청과의 국경문제 및 국방의식의 강화에 따라 북방의 경계를 고증하기 위한 자료로, 조선 지식인의 세계관 확장을 위한 정보자료로서 조선후기에 이르기까지 조선 지식인들 사이에서 매우 다양하게 활용되고 영향력을 끼쳤던 책이다. 특히 중국서적의 일방적 수용이나 단순 비판에 머물지 않고, 왜곡된 기록을 극복하기 위해 새로운 서적을 편찬하는 등 적극적으로 대응했던 점은 조선시대 중국본의 수용과 변용을 연구하는데 있어서 주목할 만한 가치를 지닌다.
