This thesis examines Cha Sang-chan's first book, 'The History of the Four Millenniums of Popular Joseon'. Although this book is a historical book, the word 'popular' is included in the title, but it is appropriate to interpret it as meaning that it is universally applicable to more people than it is understood through the introduction or book reviews, and it is also consistent with the mention of 'popular culture'. What makes this book even more interesting is the fact that historical and narrative skills are harmonious without hesitation. In the book, we looked at the aspect of harmony through concrete examples. And he saw that the writing of such a history book was related to his understanding of history. Cha Sang-chan was a person who paid attention to the marginalized. The marginalized Korean people and the marginalized people's class were considered. The genre of writing is also a style alienated from the genre of history or literature. Cha Sang-chan is a person who actively gave meaning to the alienated things. Recently, in Chuncheon, the hometown of Cha Sang-chan, research on it has been actively carried out centering on the Gangwon Cultural Education Research Center. It is expected that interest in him will increase at Korea University, where Cha Sang-chan graduated from in the future.

이 논문에서는 차상찬의 첫 단행본인 『통속조선사천년비사』를 살펴보았다. 이 책은 역사서이면서도 ‘통속’이라는 단어를 제목에 넣었는데, 여기서 통속이라는 말 은 보다 많은 이들에게 두루 통한다는 의미로 해석하는 것이 적당하며 이는 ‘대중 교양’이라는 언급과도 일맥상통한다고 보았다. 이 책이 보다 흥미로운 점은 역사 기 술과 서사 기술이 거리낌 없이 조화를 이루고 있다는 사실이다. 책 속에서 그 조화 의 양상이 어떠한지 구체적 사례를 통해 살펴보았다. 그리고 이러한 역사서 집필은 그가 갖고 있는 역사 인식과 관련이 있다고 보았다. 차상찬은 소외된 곳에 주목하 던 인물이다. 소외되어 있던 우리 민족, 그리고 소외되어 있던 민중 계급을 고찰하 였다. 글의 장르도 역사나 문학 장르에서 소외된 양식이다. 차상찬은 소외된 것들에 적극적으로 의미 부여를 하였던 인물인 것이다. 최근 차상찬의 고향인 춘천에서 강 원문화교육연구소를 중심으로 그에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 앞으로 차상찬이 졸업한 고려대학교에서도 그에 대한 관심이 늘어나기를 기대한다.
