The characteristics of lawsuits in are different from general lawsuits. An old rat led a group and stole the grains of from the grain warehouse, and the god of the warehouse sought after the instigator, the ‘search for the clear instigator’ is repeated. It can be said that the author is criticizing in the incompetence of the god of the warehouse, which is the judge, through the process and modes of such lawsuit. Furthermore, the cunning and wisdom of the old rat is vividly represented throughout the work in , and it contains the intent of the author to be wary of the cunning wisdom of lawbreakers. Most of is made of the affidavits of innocent subjects and refutation by the old rat. Various animals give their affidavits based on human norms and biases, and the old rat retorts based on a relativism world view. The author denies human norms and biases through the refutation of the old rat. Furthermore, the old rat claims that the various animals acting based on their nature and attributes contributed to carrying out the crime, and this reflects the historical world view of the author that ‘While superficially it may appear as being irrelevant with each other, but when examining it closely, various forms and phenomena are historically related.’ presents the exhausted conditions of rats, the location and management status of the grain warehouse, corruption and incompetency of national authority, etc., and then explains in detail the process and situation of the rats stealing the grains of the grain warehouse. This is sufficient proof that the author recognized that the sociability of crimes, or the crimes of the rats, are closely related to social environments and conditions. When considering such, is a work that is significant not only for fovel history, but also from the aspect of criminal sociology.

<서옥기>는 주로 국가의 불합리한 수취체제, 탐관오리의 수탈, 신분제도에 따른 차별 등 조선 후기의 사회적 모순과 부조리를 폭로ž비판한 작품으로 이해되어 왔다. 그러나 이와 관련된 내용은 늙은 쥐의 수많은 무고와 변명 가운데 극히 일부분에 해당하기 때문에 사회적 모순과 부조리에 대한 비판은 제한적인 의미만을 지닐 수 밖에 없다. <서옥기>에서 송사는 늙은 쥐가 수많은 쥐를 거느리고 가 태창의 곡식을 훔쳐 먹었는데, 창신이 사주한 자를 찾는데 주력한 결과 ‘공연한 사주자 찾기’가 반복적 으로 지속된다. 작가는 이러한 송사의 과정과 양상을 통해 판관인 창신의 무능을 비판했다고 할 수 있다. 또한 <서옥기>에는 늙은 쥐의 간교한 꾀와 지혜가 작품 전반에 걸쳐 생생하게 형상화되어 있는데, 여기에는 범법자의 간교한 지혜를 경계 하려는 작가의 의도가 담겨 있다. <서옥기>의 내용은 대부분 무고 대상자들의 공술과 이에 대한 늙은 쥐의 반박 으로 이루어져 있다. 동식물의 공술이 대체로 인간적 통념과 편견에 기반하고 있다 면, 늙은 쥐의 반박은 상대주의적 세계관에 기반하고 있다. 작가가 늙은 쥐의 반박 을 통해 인간적 통념과 편견을 부정하거나 재고하기를 촉구했던 것이다. 또한 늙은 쥐는 복숭아나무, 반딧불, 닭, 달팽이, 개미 등 여러 동식물이 각자의 본성에 따라 활동한 것이 범행을 실행하는 데 일조했다고 주장하는데, 여기에는 ‘겉 으로 보면 서로 전혀 관련이 없는 것처럼 보이지만 그 이면에는 여러 형상과 현상 이 역학적으로 관련되어 있다’는 역학적 세계관이 반영되어 있다. 역학적 세계관은 범죄의 사회성에 대한 인식과도 관련되어 있다. 이는 작가가 쥐들의 범행을 사회적 환경 및 조건 등과 관련지어 구체적이면서도 생생하게 서사하고 있다는 점에서도 확인된다. 이런 점 등을 고려할 때, <서옥기>는 소설사적으로는 물론 범죄 사회학 적 측면에서도 그 의의가 매우 큰 작품이라고 하겠다.
