In this study, various aspects of the translation of Truyện Kiều by Nguyễn Du into Han poetry (the format used in Chinese poems) were examined and placed into the historical context to show its literary significance. Translation into the Chinese poetry style was done by a Vietnamese intellectual proficient in Chinese characters along with a Chinese national living in Chợ Lớn, near Ho Chi Minh City. The two forms of poetry, the seven-character ancient poem (七 言古詩), and seven-character rhyming poem (七言絶句), were used while adopting the Truyện Kiều rhyming structure. The traditional Han poetry format of alternating six and eight characters was adopted. The translation of Nguyễn Du’s Truyện Kiều, which translated the Chinese novel JinYunQiaoZhuan(金雲翹傳)into the 6-8 character structure in Vietnamese (chữ nȏm notation), in the Chinese poetry style is quite strange at first glance. It raises questions about why it was necessary to re-translate the work. The translators themselves were aware of such potential questions, answering that they translated Truyện Kiều back into the Chinese poetry style to introduce it to Chinese readers. They had to reconcile the existence of the original JinYunXiaoZhuan in Chinese with their offering of a re-translated version of Truyện Kiều into the Chinese poetic style. The translators understood that there was a qualitative difference between the original and the poetry-style translation. They did so to convince Chinese readers that Truyện Kiều is what they called “a literary masterpiece for all generations” and felt the Chinese poetry form was the most suitable. Chinese readers may dismiss Nguyễn Du’s Truyện Kiều as a derivative translated work that has little value beyond the original, but by transforming the translation into the style of Han poetry, the translators offered the outside world a new work of high creative value while still being a translated work. In doing so, the translators joined an effort toward seeing Truyện Kiều as an outstanding piece of Vietnamese literature. The translation of Truyện Kiều into the Han poetry format was intended to prove the artistic excellence of the work, increase pride in Vietnamese culture, and further contribute to the mutual understanding between China and Vietnam.

이 글에서 필자는 응우옌주의 <쭈옌 끼에우>(이하 <끼에우>)를 한시로 번역한 작품, 곧 한시역(漢詩譯) 작품의 전반적인 양상을 살피고 번역의 의 의에 대해서 논했다. 한시역은 한문에 능한 베트남의 전통 지식인과 쩌런 (Chợ Lớn)에 거주하는 화교(華僑)에 의해서 이루어졌다. 한시 형식으로는 칠언고시, 칠언절구 형식을 채택했는가 하면 <끼에우>의 운율을 그대로 살려서 6ㆍ8자가 교대되는 한시 형식을 이용하기도 했다. 중국의 백화소설 <김운교전(金雲翹傳)>을 베트남어(쯔놈 표기) 6ㆍ8체로 번역한 응우옌주의 <끼에우>를 다시 한시로 번역한 것은 언뜻 생각하 기에 의아한 일이다. 왜 번역 작품을 ‘다시’ 번역’하는 일이 필요한가? 번역 자들은 그런 의문을 의식하고서, 중국인 독자에게 보이기 위해서 <끼에 우>를 한시로 번역한다고 답했다. 중국인 독자에게는 읽을 수 있는 원작 <김운교전>이 있는데, 어째서 <끼에우>를 ‘한시’ 형식으로 재차 번역하는 가? 그것은 번역자들이 원작 <김운교전>과 응우옌주의 운문 번역인 <끼에 우>가 질적으로 차이가 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 중국인에게 <끼에우>가 “불후(不朽)의 문예(文藝) 걸작(傑作)”임을 납득시키기 위해서는 한시로 번역해 보이는 것이 최선이라고 생각했다. 중국인이라면 응우옌주의 <끼에우>는 번역 작품일 따름이어서 원작을 넘어서는 가치가 있다고 인정할 수 없다고 생각할 수 있는데, 번역자들은 한시 형식으로 번역을 해서 그런 생각을 불식시키고, <끼에우>가 번역 작 품이면서 동시에 탁월한 창작품이기도 하다는 사실을 내외에 알리고자 했 다. 그렇게 함으로써 번역자들은 <끼에우>를 베트남의 뛰어난 민족어 문 학 작품(정전)이라고 평가하는 시대적인 움직임에 동참했다. 한시체 번역을 통해서 <끼에우>의 예술적 탁월성을 입증하고, 베트남 인의 문화적 자긍심을 높이고, 나아가 중국과 베트남의 상호 이해에 기여 하고자 했으니, 번역의 의의가 자못 크다고 할 수 있다.
