Viet Thanh Nguyen's novel The Sympathizer, featuring a main character who serves as a Vietcong double spy during and after the Vietnam War, is drawing much attention to the dual identity between communism and capitalism along with the mixed-blood one born between a French father, who is also a Catholic priest, and a Vietnamese mother. Until now, the previous studies at home and abroad have reviewed the narrator's identity characteristics and reproduction methods but do not specifically analyze the text mixed with temporal and spatial backgrounds and events. This paper analyzes the whole text while focusing on the parts related to the American Vietnam War movie in the work to define and illuminate the boundary aesthetics shown in The Sympathizer and studies the ways to form the desirable symbiosis between the East and the West in the 21st century. To this end, this research introduces the past discourse on the narrator's identity by considering the tendency of prior research at home and abroad and studies the contents of the text to convert the discussion to the subject of boundary aesthetics. Subsequently, this paper specifies the nature of boundary aesthetics by analyzing the parts that the narrator conflicts with the US Auteur in the light of the existing film discourse. Through the analysis of the complex text of this novel, this research defines that boundary aesthetics is a driving force to continue the emotional connection of humankind by resolving conflicts by keeping the boundary between confronting cultures and ideologies. This boundary aesthetic thinking can explain ‘nothing itself' that allows readers to sympathize with the mixed-race and the dual political orientation that inflicted pain on the narrator from the start and provide evidence to criticize the shortcomings of the US Vietnam War film. Lastly, this research emphasizes that literary inspiration can form a humanitarian consensus for those who have experienced ethnic division due to foreign intervention.

비엣탄응웬의 소설 『동조자』는 베트남전쟁과 이후에 베트콩 이중간첩으로 활동한 인물을 주인공으로 하여 프랑스인 사제출신 아버지와 베트남 인 어머니 사이에 태어나 가진 혼혈성과 함께 공산주의와 자본주의 간 이 중적인 정체성에 대해서 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 그동안 국내외 선행연구 는 화자의 정체성 특징과 재현방법을 고찰하지만, 시공간적 배경과 사건이 뒤섞인 텍스트를 구체적으로 분석하지 않고 있다. 이 논문은 『동조자』에 나타난 경계미학을 정의하고 조명하기 위해서 작품 속 미국 베트남전쟁 영 화 관련 부분을 중심으로 텍스트 전반을 분석하고, 21세기 동서양의 바람직한 공생관계 형성을 위한 방안을 연구한다. 이를 위해 국내외 선행연구 경향을 고찰하여 지금까지 논의된 화자의 정체성과 관련한 담론을 소개하 고, 이를 경계미학의 주제로 전환하기 위해서 텍스트의 내용을 고찰한다. 이어서 화자가 작가주의 미국 영화감독과 충돌한 부분을 기존의 영화 담론 에 비추어 분석하여 경계미학의 속성을 구체화한다. 이 소설의 복잡한 텍 스트를 분석한 결과, 경계미학을 대립하고 있는 문화와 이념 간 경계를 지 켜 갈등을 해소하는 방식으로 인류의 정서적인 연결을 지속하는 동력으로 정의한다. 이 경계미학적 사고는 처음부터 화자에게 고통을 주었던 혼혈성과 이중적인 정치성향에 공감할 수 있도록 하게 한 ‘아무것도 아닌 그것’을 설명하고, 미국 베트남전쟁 영화의 단점을 비판할 수 있는 근거를 제시할 수 있다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 문학적인 영감이 외세의 개입으로 인한 민 족분열을 경험한 사람들에게 인도주의적 공감대를 형성할 수 있음을 강조 한다.
