The purpose of this study was to develop ways to improve counseling with older adults, specifically focused on the counseling environments for counselors in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. A qualitative research method was adopted to collect the experiences of counselors with older adults. Nine participants were selected with the reputational case selection, and data were collected through focus group interviews. Additionally, the constant comparison method suggested by Krueger and Casey (2009) was used to analyze the collected data. As a result, nine subcategories, 1) an increase of clients due to COVID-19, 2) a non-face-to-face counseling environment, 3) shortage of manpower, 4) poor working conditions for counselors, 5) insufficient support programs for counselors, 6) a job identity confusion, 7) burnout experiences due to the characteristics of older adults, 8) experiences in the client's change, and 9) rewards for counselors working with older adults, were identified. Based on the results, several implications are suggested such as 1) a development of new ways of counseling to respond in a rapidly changing environment, 2) the improvement of the treatment for counselors at work and manpower supplement, 3) the provision of donated materials considering of the characteristics of older clients, and 4) the construction of a supervision system to secure the expertise of counselors.

본 연구의 목적은 경기도 노인상담사업 상담사의 노인상담 경험을 통해 노인상담사업을 어렵게 만드는 환경 을 규명하고 개선방향을 제시하는 것이다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 세평적 사례선택(reputational case selection)을 활용하여 총 9명의 연구참여자들을 선정하였고, 초점집단면접을 통해 자료를 수집했다. 수집된 자 료는 Krueger와 Casey(2009)가 제안한 초점집단면접 분석 틀 중 반복적 비교분석법(constant comparison method)으로 분석했다. 분석 결과, 코로나19로 인한 내담자 증가, 비대면 상담 환경, 부족한 인력, 열악한 처우, 상담사 지원 사업 미비, 직무 정체성 혼란, 노년기 특성으로 인한 소진, 내담자의 변화 경험, 상담에서의 보람으로 총 9개의 하위범주가 도출되었다. 연구자들은 상술한 연구결과를 바탕으로 급변하는 환경에 대응하는 새로운 노인상담 전개, 상담사의 처우개선 및 인력충원, 내담자인 노인의 특성을 고려한 후원물품 제공, 상담사의 전문 성 확보를 위한 지원정책 개발과 같은 노인상담사업의 발전을 위한 함의를 제시하였다.
