Porcelain carving is a traditional Chinese ceramic decoration technique. It is the creation of calligraphy, painting and seal cutting on the surface of fired porcelain with tools. It’s biggest feature is that it can not only retain the style of calligraphy and painting on porcelain, but also effectively combine the characteristics of clay and glaze, so that the decorative patterns have a strong sense of three-dimensional and hierarchy. Although the porcelain carving technique is a traditional technique in China, it is not known in the Korean ceramic industry. This paper aims to expand the field of modern ceramic art by introducing China's porcelain carving techniques. Based on the field investigation and research of Zibo porcelain carving technology, this paper understands the tool characteristics, knife method and process flow of portrait porcelain carving. This study focuses on the development background of porcelain carving techniques and the detailed production process of portrait porcelain carving. According to historical records, porcelain carving sprouted in the Song and Yuan Dynasties and really developed into the art of porcelain carving in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Carved porcelain was very popular during the Guangxu period and the Republic of China, and then gradually evolved into an art form and carrier. On the basis of porcelain carving technology, this paper introduces three ceramic artists, who inherited the porcelain carving tradition and made innovations. The results of this study are a useful supplement to the study of the evolution of modern expression in the face of new tradition, and promote a new understanding of ceramic surface decoration.
