This is a study on foreign missionaries who visited Korea for Protestant missions in Korea that started after the Open Ports Act of the Joseon Dynasty. When the Joseon Dynasty of feudalism system was facing the demands of modernization, it investigated how the experiences of missionaries from Western cultures about Korean cultures and relationships with Koreans. At the same time, this study examines how Koreans reacted to, conflicted with, and accepted and changed Christian culture as a foreign culture and the activities of missionaries. Based on the databook of 『General List of Missionaries to Korea, 1884-1984』, based on 1,529 missionaries who were confirmed to have visited Korea in 1945, the activities of missionaries from the United States, which account for 69.3% of the number of missionaries, were examined. To examine the influence of Korean missionaries on the Joseon Dynasty and the Koreans’ response to it, ‘Missionary and Politics; Allen and Underwood‘ and ’Missionaries and Education and Healthcare; With the theme of ‘Women’s Work for Women’, this research was conducted from a historical, religious, social and cultural perspective. Protestant missionaries based on Western civilization who visited Korea adopted a cultural mission method differentiated from other mission fields in the special historical situation of the Joseon Dynasty during the crisis of imperialism and colonization. appeared, and this marked the beginning of the modernization of Korea.

이 논문은 조선개항이후 시작된 한국 내 개신교 선교를 위한 내 한한 외국국적 선교사에 대한 연구로서, 봉건제도 하의 조선이 근 대화의 요구에 직면해 있을 당시, 서구문화권에서 온 선교사들이 경험한 한국문화 및 한국인들과의 관계를 살펴보고 이와 동시에 한 국인들이 외래문화로서의 기독교문화와 선교사들의 활동에 대해 어떻게 반응하고 갈등 그리고 수용 및 변용했는지에 대해 알아보고자 했다. 『내한 선교사총람, 1884-1984』의 자료집을 근거로 1945년에 내한이 확인된 선교사 1,529명을 기반으로 선교사 수의 69.3%를 차지하는 미국출신 선교사들의 활동들을 살펴보았다. 조선인접 국 가들의 서구문화 유입과 근대화 과정 상황 속에서 내한한 선교사들 이 조선에 미친 영향과 이에 대한 한국인들의 반응을 알아보기 위 해, ‘선교사와 정치; 알렌과 언더우드’와 ‘선교사와 교육 및 의료; 여성을 위한 여성사역(Women’s Work for Women)’로 주제로 역사적, 그리고 종교사회문화적 관점에서 연구하였다. 이를 내한한 서구문명 기반의 개신교 선교사들이 제국주의 식민 지화의 위기라는 조선의 역사적 특수한 상황에서 다른 선교지와 차 별화된 문화적 선교방식을 채택하였고, 이 선교방식이 근대화의 열 망을 지닌 한국인들의 지지와 적극적인 참여의 결과로 나타났고, 이는 한국의 시대적 근대화의 시작이 되었다.
