Homer Bezaleel Hulbert, an American missionary to Period from the end of the Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire, translated Korean fairy tales into English in 1925 and published it under the name of [OMJEE THE WIZARD, KOREAN FOLK STORIES]. This book is divided into 17 chapters in which Korean folktales, which were judged to be unique to Korea, were translated and compiled into a language suitable for children’s level. Included in the story are 10 stories that are passed down orally, including novels such as , , and . These stories were composed of a single narrative through rewriting and adaptation, rather than translating and introducing the recorded stories as they are. Characteristic elements are revealed in this process: the way they are constructed and the nomenclature of the characters. In terms of story composition, ‘Omjee’ is a way of telling a story to ‘Soktary’ and other children, which is a familiar type to deliver Korean stories to American readers. It is also characteristic that each animal was named in English while taking a unique compositional method. Each animal in the animal story does not have a specific name, but English names were given during the translation and introduction process, and the characters in the novel were expressed by changing their names to easier pronunciation, in an attempt to approach children more familiarly. Hulbert composed a single story rather than translating and introducing individual Korean stories. He intended to introduce Korean stories in the form of stories familiar to Westerners. In this process, Korean folktales were rewritten in various ways, and the direction of the rewrite took the form of a fairy tale familiar to children. As a result, a story unfamiliar to us was created. The clothes worn by the characters in the illustrations inserted in the middle of the story have changed to the extent that they are Chinese clothes, not hanbok. Although the missionaries of the Period from the end of the Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire who introduced Korean culture and literature to the West were spreaders of Korean culture, they were still strangers who viewed Korean culture based on a Western way of thinking.

구한말의 선교사였던 미국인 호머 헐버트(Homer Bezaleel Hulbert)는 1925년에 한국의 설화를 영어로 번역해 [OMJEE THE WIZARD, KOREAN FOLK STORIES]라는 이름으로 출 간했다. 한국 고유의 이야기라고 판단한 한국의 설화를 아이들의 수준에 맞는 언어로 바꾸어 번역하여 엮은 이 책은 총 17개의 장으 로 구분되어 있다. 수록된 이야기는 <구토지설>, <콩쥐팥쥐>, <흥부놀부> 등의 소설류를 비롯해 구비 전승되는 설화 10편이다. 이들 이야기는 채록된 이야기를 그대로 번역해서 소개하는 방식이 아닌 개작과 각색을 통해 한 편의 서사물로 구성하였다. 이 과정에서 특 징적인 요소가 드러나는데, 구성 방식과 등장 인물의 명명법이다. 이야기 구성면에서 보면, ‘Omjee(엄지)’가 ‘Soktary(석달이)’를 비롯한 아이들에게 이야기를 해주는 방식인데, 이는 한국의 이야기 를 미국인 독자에게 전달하기 위해 친숙한 유형을 선택한 것이다. 독특한 구성방식을 취하면서 각 동물의 이름을 영어식으로 명명했 다는 점도 특징점이다. 동물담에 등장하는 각 동물들은 특정한 이 름이 없으나 번역 소개하는 과정에서 영어식 이름을 붙였고, 소설 에 등장하는 인물은 보다 쉬운 발음의 이름으로 바꾸어 표현함으로 써 어린이에게 친숙하게 다가가고자 했던 것이다. 헐버트는 한국의 개별 설화를 번역해서 소개하는 방식보다는 한 편의 이야기로 구성해냈다. 서양인에게 친숙한 이야기의 형식 안에 한국의 이야기를 소개하려는 의도였다. 이 과정에서 한국의 설화는 다양하게 개작되었고, 그 개작의 방향은 아이들에게 친숙한 동화의 형식을 갖추게 되었다. 그 결과 우리에게 익숙하지 않은 설화가 만 들어졌다. 이야기 중간에 삽입된 삽화에 등장하는 인물이 입은 옷 은 한복이 아닌 중국의 옷일 정도로 변개되었다. 한국의 문화와 문 학을 서양에 알렸던 구한말의 선교사들은 한국문화의 전파자였지만 여전히 서양식 사고방식에 입각해 한국문화를 바라보았던 이방인이 었던 셈이다.
