The Taego Order of Korean Buddhism is a Buddhist sect that inherits the tradition of Korean Buddhism along with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. After a long process of disputes, it was separated from the Jogye Order in 1970 and has grown into an independent religious body. This thesis was published at the 3rd academic seminar of the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism on October 22, 2021 under the theme of Exploring the Future Orientation of the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism. The writer looked at the future direction of the Taego Order, 50 years after the division. There are three main problems covered in this paper. The first is the need to establish the ‘Taego Order study’. I emphasized the need for this, as Taego Order has not established ‘Taego Order study’ that can be presented internally and externally so far, even after 50 years of the division. The second is about so-called ‘Bodhisattva Buddhism’. In addition to the question of the discipline of married monks, the advantages and disadvantages of the Taegojong’s unique six-part monk system were examined. In particular, I looked at the precepter among the six-part monks. The third is about the ‘direction of future missionary work’ of the Taego Order. Here, I emphasized that the existing strengths of Taego Order should be well utilized in accordance with future generations. Taego Order inherits the traditions of Zen, lecture, Pure Land and observing the Buddhist commandments of Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon in the late Joseon Dynasty. It is deeply related to the spiritual culture of Namdo province. Although this is an article that sincerely contains the writer’s thoughts on the future of Taego Order, I think it has its own meaning in reality that academic discourse on Taego Order has not been made.

한국불교태고종은 대한불교조계종과 더불어 한국불교의 전통을 계승하고 있는 불교 종단으로서, 오랜 분규의 과정을 거쳐 1970년 조계종에서 분립하여 독립된 종단으로 성장해오고 있다. 본 논문은 ‘한국불교태고종의 미래지향성 탐구’라는 주제 아래 지난 2021년 10월 22일 한국불교태고종 제3차 학술세미나에서 발표한 글이다. 분종 이후 50년이 지난 태고종의 미래 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 살펴보았다. 본고에서 다루고 있는 문제는 크게 세 가지이다. 첫째는 ‘태고종학’의 정립 필요성이 다. 태고종은 분종 50년이 지났음에도 불구하고 지금까지 대내외적으로 내놓을만한 ‘종학’이 정립되어 있지 않아 이에 대한 필요성을 역설하였다. 둘째는 소위 ‘보살불교’에 관한 것이다. 결혼한 승려들의 계율에 관한 문제와 더불어, 태고종 고유의 육부승 제도의 장단점을 살펴보았다. 특히 육부승 가운데 전법사 제도에 대해 살펴보았다. 셋째는 태고 종의 ‘미래 포교 방향’에 관한 것이다. 여기에서는 태고종이 가진 기존의 장점들을 미래 세대에 맞추어 잘 살려 나아가야 함을 역설하였다. 태고종은 조선 후기 순천 선암사의 선과 강학 및 정토와 지계 등의 전통을 계승하고 있는 종단으로서 남도의 정신문화와 관련성이 깊다. 비록 태고종의 미래에 대한 논자의 생각들을 진솔하게 담은 글이지만, 태고종에 관한 학술적 담론이 이루어지지 못하고 있는 현실에서 나름의 의미가 있다고 생각한다.
