In the 1950s, Han Mal-sook, one of the new female writers, resisted the discourse of the times and embodied the desires of female subjects through “love.” Existing evaluations of Han’s novels have considered them as disconnected from the early 1950s, which embodies apres-girl's desires and sensuous sexuality, and from the 1960s, which was sealed into the inner world of middle-class women within the institutionalized world. However, Han Mal-sook's novels can be understood continuously in that romantic love, passionate love, and women's independent narcissism or desires continue to compete inside and outside the institutional boundaries. Her early works in the 1950s depict a female subject who escapes out of the boundaries from romantic love through passionate love by actively embodying the apres-girl's desire that dictates the desire of a denied woman. Dojeong, written in 1960, is a transitional work that shows the process of Han’s literary world changing, embodying the possibility of expanding the narcissistic love of young women who try to expand their boundaries instead of escaping. Although such young women's independence does not last and female characters settle inside the home after the mid-1960s, Han Mal-sook continues to seek love that does not conflict with women's desires through subjects who criticize romantic love from within the system, and between the writing of motherly and worldly selfishness.

1950년대 신인여성작가 중 한 명인 한말숙의 작품세계는 ‘사랑’이라는 기표를 통해 시대적 담론에 저항하고 여성 주체의 삶과 욕망을 형상화해 왔다. 한말숙의 작품세계에 대한 기존의 평가는 아프레적 욕망과 감각적 인 섹슈얼리티를 형상화한 1950년대 초기작과 제도화된 세계 내부의 중산 층 여성의 내적 세계로 봉합되는 1960년대 이후의 후기작품을 단절된 것 으로 평가해왔다. 그러나 낭만적 사랑, 열정적 사랑, 그리고 여성의 주체 적 자기애 혹은 욕망이 경합하는 양상이 제도적 경계 안팎에서 지속된다 는 점에서 한말숙의 작품세계는 연속적으로 이해될 수 있다. 1950년대 한 말숙의 초기 단편들은 부정된 여성의 욕망을 지시하는 아프레적 욕망을 오히려 적극적으로 형상화하여 낭만적 사랑에서 열정적 사랑을 거쳐 경 계 밖으로 탈주하는 여성 주체를 그려낸다. 1960년에 창작된 첫 장편소설 『하얀 도정』은 작품세계의 변화 과정을 보여주는 과도기적 작품으로, 탈 주하는 대신 경계를 확장하려는 청년 여성의 자기애적 사랑의 확장 가능성을 형상화한다. 비록 그러한 청년 여성의 독립성이 지속되지 못하고 1960년대 중반 이후의 여성 인물들은 가정 내부로 안착되지만, 한말숙은 낭만적 사랑을 제도 내부에서부터 비판한다. 또한 성화(聖化)된 모성과 세 속적인 이기심으로 비판받는 욕망의 글쓰기 사이에서 줄타기하는 주체들 을 통해 여성의 욕망과 충돌하지 않는 사랑에 대한 모색을 지속해나간다
