This paper examines the unique pattern of writing in literature written during the modern transitional period, by focusing on SaitPyuljeon, written by Annie Baird. As a literary work written in Hangeul by an American missionary, it makes a good case study, as it captures the life and landscape of the Joseon kingdom in the late 19th century. The main part analyzes the writing style of the text and its implications in two aspects: formality and content. I begin by looking into its format, combining both classical novel and mission pamphlet. Specifically, the story borrows the elements of a classical novel externally, while its structure resembles that of mission pamphlets published around the 1890s. Next, I point out that the plot is mostly episodic in character, because the narrative is condensed. As for the strong contemporary character, I look into where the author pays particular attention to events and phenomena in late 19th century Joseon. In conclusion, I appreciate the significance of SaitPyuljeon both as a mission pamphlet and a contemporary literary work, because the story seamlessly binds the unfamiliar with the familiar, and combines Christian messages with daily issues of the time. Also, elements previously considered hallmarks of the modern in literary works are also found in this story, suggesting that the transition to modernity was budding earlier than commonly thought. 이 논문은 선교사 애니 베어드(Annie Laurie Adames Baird, 1864-1916)가 쓴 ｢샛 별전｣을 대상으로 하여 작품이 전환기 문학으로서 내포하고 있는 특징을 글쓰기 측면에 초점 맞춰 살펴본 것이다. ｢샛별전｣을 연구 대상으로 선택 한 까닭은 외국인 선교사가 한글로 창작한 작품이며 19세기 말 조선 사회 의 다양한 모습을 담고 있어서, 글쓰기 측면에서 전환기 문학이 갖는 특 징을 볼 수 있을 것으로 기대했기 때문이다. 본문에서는 ｢샛별전｣ 글쓰기의 특징과 의의를 형식적 측면과 내용적 측면으로 나누어 살펴보았는데, 고전소설과 선교문서 형식이 융합되고 서 사시간의 단축과 당대성의 강화가 이루어진 것을 특징으로 정리하였다. 고전소설과 선교문서 형식의 융합을 다룬 장에서는 고전소설로부터 차용 한 외형적인 요소들과 1890년대를 전후하여 출간된 선교문서로부터 받은 구조적인 영향과 의미를 살펴보았다. 또 서사시간의 단축과 당대성의 강 화를 다룬 장에서는 서사시간의 단축으로 인해 이야기가 일화적 성격을 보이는 면을 살폈고, 당대성의 강화와 관련하여서는 작가가 주목한 19세 기 말 조선의 사건과 현상 등에 대해 검토했다. 이를 통해 ｢샛별전｣은 기독교 초심자를 독자로 삼아, 형식과 내용 양 면에서 익숙한 것과 낯선 것, 독자들이 겪은 현실의 문제와 기독교적 메시지를 조화시켜 선교문서로서 의 역할과 시대에 조응하는 문학으로서의 역할을 감당하고 있다고 보았다. 또 근대문학적 징후들이 신소설보다 앞서 창작된 ｢샛별전｣과 같은 작품에 서부터 싹트고 있었음을 보여주기 때문에도 의미가 있다고 정리했다.
