The purpose of the current study was to examine the moderated mediation effect of social support through the drinking motive to cope in the relationship between distress tolerance and impaired control on alcohol. Among college students, 244 problematic alcohol users were selected according to the result of Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test scores. Distress tolerance, social support, drinking motives, and impaired control on alcohol were measured and analyzed using SPSS Macro. The results for this study were as follows. First, coping motive was found to fully mediate the relationship between distress tolerance and impaired control on alcohol. Second, social support moderated the relationship between distress tolerance and coping motive. Third, the moderated mediation effect of social support through coping motive was found in the effect of lack of distress tolerance on impaired control on alcohol. That is, individuals with low social support perceived high levels of coping motive and were vulnerable to impaired control on alcohol whereas, those with high social support perceived low levels of coping motive and were not vulnerable to impaired control on alcohol. These results not only highlight the importance on considering distress tolerance and coping motive when dealing with impaired control on alcohol but also the buffering effect of social support. Finally, implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

본 연구에서는 문제음주자의 고통 감내력 부족과 알코올 자기조절 실패 간의 관계를 음주 대처동기가 매 개하는지 살펴보고, 사회적 지지가 이러한 매개효과를 조절하는지 알아보기 위해 조절된 매개효과를 검증 하였다. 이를 위해 알코올 사용장애 진단검사의 점수에 따라 문제음주 대학생 244명을 선발하였다. 그들을 대상으로 고통 감내력 부족, 사회적지지, 음주 동기, 알코올 조절 실패를 측정하였고, SPSS Macro를 사용하 여 자료를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 음주 대처동기가 고통 감내력 부족과 알코올 조절 실패 간의 관계를 완전매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 고통 감내력 부족이 음주 대처동기에 미치는 영향을 사회적 지지가 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 고통 감내력 부족이 알코올 조절 실패에 미치는 영향에서 음주 대처동기를 통한 사회적 지지의 조절된 매개효과가 나타났다. 즉, 사회적 지지가 낮은 사람 은 고통 감내력이 부족하면 높은 수준의 음주 대처동기가 일어나 알코올 조절에 실패하지만 사회적 지지 가 높은 사람은 고통 감내력이 부족하더라도 음주 대처동기가 덜 일어나 알코올 조절에 실패할 가능성이 낮다는 것이다. 이러한 결과는 문제음주자의 알코올 조절 실패를 다룸에 있어서 고통 감내력과 음주 대처 동기를 고려하는 것의 필요성과 더불어 사회적 지지의 완충효과의 중요성을 강조한다. 마지막으로 본 연구 의 시사점과 제한점 및 미래 연구에 관한 제언에 대해 논의하였다.
