This study conducted a mixed study utilizing the complementary strengths of quantitative and qualitative research for an integrated understanding of the intercultural competence of children in commumity children’s centers who are rapidly changing into a multicultural environment. A quantitative study was conducted on 208 children out of 220 children in grades 4-6 who used communityl children’s centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang, and an in-depth study of 8 children in grades 5-6 who used community children’s centers. Based on the interview, a qualitative study was conducted using the sequential explanatory design method. The results of a quantitative study of 208 children out of 220 children in grades 4-6 who use regional children’s centers located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang, and an in-depth study of 8 children in grades 5-6 who use commumity children’s centers Qualitative study of interviews was conducted using the sequential explanatory design method. As a result of the mixed study, it was found that the interaction between parents and children and the sense of community had a positive effect on the intercultural competence of children in community children’s centers. On the other hand, the support of teachers at commumity children’s centers was found to be insignificant, but the importance of teacher support at commumity children’s centers was confirmed through a qualitative study. In the midst of the change to a multicultural society, a more systematic and continuous improvement of intercultural competency was sought in the informal domain of the home, the public domain of the school, and the non formal domain of the commumity children’s center.

본 연구는 급격하게 다문화환경으로 변화하고 있는 지역아동센터 아동의 상호문화 역량에 대한 통합적 이해를 위해 양적연구와 질적 연구의 상호보완적 장점을 활용한 혼합연구를 실시하였다. 서울, 경기, 인천, 충청, 경상에 소재한 지역아동센터를 이용 하는 초등 4∼6학년 아동 220명 중 최종 208명을 대상으로 양적연구를 실시하고, 지역 아동센터를 이용하는 5∼6학년 아동 8명의 심층 인터뷰를 토대로 질적 연구를 수행한 순차설명설계 방법으로 진행하였다. 혼합연구 결과, 지역아동센터 아동의 상호문화역량에 부모자녀 상호작용과 공동체 의식은 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 지역아동센터의 교사지지는 통계 적으로 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났으나, 질적 연구를 통해 지역아동센터 교사지지의 중요성을 확인하게 되었다. 이에 다문화사회로의 변화 속에 지역아동센터를 이용하는 아동의 비공식적 영역인 가정, 공적 영역인 학교, 준공식 영역인 지역아동센터에서의 보다 체계적이고 지속적인 상호문화역량의 증진 방안을 모색하였다.
