On March 5, 2004, the Donghak Special Act was enacted, and on February 19, 2019, the anniversary of the Donghak Peasants Revolution (May 11) was enacted. Therefore, the uprising of the Donghak Peasants Army in 1894 was confirmed at the national level as the “Donghak Peasants Revolution”. However, this incident is still referred to as the “Donghak Peasants Movement” in the textbooks of high school Korean history certified by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea. From the liberation in 1945 to the early 1960s, Donghak Peasants Revolution had been referred to as “Donghak Revolt” in high school history textbooks. Then, after the Park Chung‐hee regime took office, the “Donghak Revolt” became a “Donghak Revolution”. However, when the new military took power in the 1980s, it became the “Donghak Movement”, and after that, it solidified as “Donghak Peasants Movement”. This seems to be reflected in the will of the new military government at the time, which ostensibly denied the Yushin regime and feared the revolution from below. And from after the liberation to high school Korean history textbooks under the 2015 revised curriculum, in both divisions of research and textbook descriptions, it still hasn't completely deviated from the structure suggested by Oh Ji‐yeong's “History of Donghak”. That is, in some textbooks, the MuJang uprising, the beginning of the 1st Donghak Peasants Revolution, is omitted or BaekSan Rally ‘Manifesto’ is presented as it is. In the future, “Donghak Peasants Movement” will be changed to “Donghak Peasants Revolution” in line with the establishment of special laws and its national anniversary enactment, and based on this, better high school Korean history textbooks should be published reflecting the latest research trends.

2004년 3월 5일 동학 특별법이 제정되고 2019년 2월 19일 동학농민혁명 기 념일(5월 11일)이 제정되었다. 따라서 국가적 차원에서 1894년 동학농민군의 봉기는 “동학농민혁명”임이 확정되었다. 그러나 대한민국 교육부 검정 하 고 등학교 한국사 교과서에서 이 사건은 아직도 “동학 농민 운동”이라고 지칭되 고 있다. 1945년 해방 이후 1960년대 초반에 이르기까지 고등학교 국사 교과서에서 동학농민혁명은 “동학란”으로 지칭되었다. 그러다가 박정희 집권 이후 “동학 란”이 “동학 혁명”이 되기도 하였다. 하지만 1980년대 신군부가 집권하면서 “동학 운동”이 되었고 이후 “동학 농민 운동”으로 굳어졌다. 여기에는 표면 적이나마 유신정권을 부정하고 아래로부터의 혁명을 두려워하였던 당시 신군 부 정권의 의지와 반영된 것으로 보인다. 그리고 역시 해방 이후 2015 개정 교육과정 하 고등학교 한국사 교과서에 이르기까지 연구와 교과서 서술 두 부문 모두 아직까지도 오지영의 『동학사』가 제시한 구조를 완전히 벗어나지 못했다. 이를테면 일부 교과서에서는 제1 차 동학농민혁명의 시작인 무장기포가 누락되어 있거나 백산대회 ‘격문’이 그 대로 제시되어 있다. 앞으로는 “동학 농민 운동”을 특별법과 국가기념일 제정에 걸맞게 “동학농 민혁명”으로 바로잡고 이를 토대로 최신 연구 경향을 반영하여 더욱 훌륭한 고등학교 한국사 교과서를 출간해야 할 것이다.
