This research in progress presents our preliminary findings on how AI-driven and app-based platform businesses in South Korea reshape the labor condition of food delivery workers. As an on-going qualitative case study, we first explicate the way food delivery service markets (i.e., Coupang, Yogiyo, and Baemin) work through app-based platforms, and then explain how they introduce danger and insecurity in the labor practices of food delivery workers. Employing the qualitative case study method, we have conducted 25 semi-structured interviews so far. With the grounded theory method, we are in the process of analyzing the interview data with dual perspectives of platform firms and platform labors so that the contradictory interests entrenched in their app-based business practices clearly stand out. With the presentation of our preliminary findings, we expect to receive constructive feedbacks to further develop our on-going research into a complete research paper which can guide policy makers to improve labor condition of app-based platform economy in South Korea.
