What kind of period was the 1940-50s in terms of film history? The highlight of this period was the emergence of ‘neo-realism’, which appeared right after the World War II. The appearance of ‘neo-realism’ elicited direct and diverse discussions on ‘film’ and led to the prescription of the identity of ‘film’. That is, discussions on ‘realism’ films were the core of this period. However, the discussions on the identity of ‘film’ were limited to European films along with neo-realism, and the concepts that were accordingly raised to establish realism were not applied to American films. It is a wonder that the discussions on Hollywood films mainly covered auteurism and Hollywood classics but not the identity of ‘film’ during this period. In other words, this could be interpreted as a tendency of addressing Hollywood films as a fruit in terms of value assessment or aesthetics. However, from a partial view, although the assessments that had been prepared in Hollywood classics were not actually aimed at the prescription of ‘realism’ itself, comparable discussions took place. In the 1950s, a new perspective and viewpoint about the ‘real’ started to emerge in Hollywood films as well. Therefore, this paper aims to deal with the issue of the ‘American realism’ that emerged in earnest from the late 1940s to the 1950s as Hollywood films went through film noir. Surprisingly, ‘acting’ was what led the most remarkable change in the Hollywood films of this period. Such a change appeared as films encountered the ‘real’ through the production environment, and by the 1950s, the issue of ‘realistic acting’ started to rise along with the emergence of new actors in Hollywood films. That is, ‘pieces of the real’ had begun to infiltrate into the narratives. Therefore, this paper aims to trace the changes related to the ‘acting’ in America by using some representative works of the 1950s as examples and utilize relevant discussions to study the role and meaning of the ‘real’ that newly emerged in Hollywood films.

1940-50년대는 영화사적으로 어떤 시기였을까? 이 시기에 가장 중요한 사건은 제 2차 세계대전 직후에 나타난 ‘네오리얼리즘’의 등장이다. ‘네오리얼리즘’의 출현은 ‘영화’에 대한 직접적이고 다양한 논의들을 이끌어냈고 그와 더불어 ‘영화’의 정체성을 규정하도록 했다. 즉, 이 시기는 ‘리얼리즘’ 영화들에 대한 논의들이 핵심이었다. 하지만 네오리얼리즘과 함께 ‘영화’의 정체성에 대한 논의는 유럽영화로 국한되었으며, 그로부터 제기된 리얼리즘의 확립을 위한 개념들이 미국영화에는 적용되지 않았다. 이 시기 헐리우드 영화에 대한 논의는 주로 작가주의, 헐리우드 클래식 등으로 이루어졌을 뿐, ‘영화’라는 정체성과 함께 다뤄지지는 않았던 것은 의아한 일이다. 이는 다시 말해, 헐리우드 영화가 가치 평가적이거나 미학적인 성과물로서 다뤄진 경향이었다고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 부분적으로 볼 때, 헐리우드 클래식에 있어서 마련된 평가들이 사실상 ‘리얼리즘’ 자체를 규정하기 위한 것은 아니었지만, 그에 준하는 논의들이 이루어졌는데, 1950년대에 이르러 헐리우드 영화에서도 ‘사실’에 대한 새로운 관점과 시각이 등장하기 시작했다는 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 헐리우드 영화가 필름 누아르를 거치면서 1940년대 후반부터 1950년대까지 본격적으로 등장한 ‘미국식 리얼리즘’의 문제를 다루고자 한다. 놀랍게도 이 시기 헐리우드 영화에서 가장 현저한 변화를 선도해 간 것은 바로 ‘연기’였다. 이러한 변화는 영화가 제작 환경을 통해 ‘사실’을 만나는 과정에서 나타났으며, 1950년대에 이르러 헐리우드 영화에 새로운 배우들의 등장과 함께 ‘사실주의 연기’의 문제가 대두되기 시작했다. 즉, ‘사실의 조각’들이 서사 안으로 침투하기 시작한 것이다. 따라서 본 논문은 1950년대 대표적인 몇몇 작품들을 예로 들어 미국에서의 ‘연기’와 관련된 변화들을 추적해보고, 이를 둘러싼 논의들을 통해서 헐리우드 영화 안에서 새롭게 나타난 ‘사실’의 역할과 의미에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다.
