The objective of this study is to examine the use of word spacing and punctuation marks targeting the elementary school Korean language textbooks in the Japanese colonial era and the U.S. military government period. The word spacing and punctuation marks in textbooks allow the efficient learning by raising the readability. Even in the enlightenment period when the norm of Korean language was not clearly established, there were relevant discussions. After the ｢Draft for Hangeul Unified Spelling System｣ was distributed by the Korean Language Society during the Japanese colonial era, it started to be more actively applied. In the elementary school Korean language textbooks written in Hangeul, the use of word spacing and punctuation marks is essential. Thus, changing from the use of punctuation marks for vertical writing of Korean-Chinese mixed style to the method of using the word spacing and punctuation marks, they were more fully shown in horizontal writing. The change in writing style became a chance to subdivide the punctuation into word spacing and punctuation marks, which is shown in Korean language textbooks in the Japanese colonial era and the U.S. military government period.

이 논문은 일제 강점기와 미군정기 초등 국어 교과서를 대상으로 띄어쓰기와 문장부호의 쓰임을 살피는 데 목적이 있다. 교과서의 띄어쓰기와 문장부호는 가독성을 높여 효율적인 학습을 가능하게 한다. 국어 규범이 명확하게 정립되지 않았던 개화기에도 관련 논의가 있었으나 일제 강점기 조선어학회의 『한글 마춤법 통일안』이 보급되면서 보다 적극적으로 적용되기 시작한다. 한글 표기를 취하는 초등 국어 교과서는 사이 띄우기와 문장부호 사용이 필수적이다. 이에 따라 국한문혼용체의 세로쓰기에 구두점을 활용하였던 형태에서 사이 띄우기와 문장부호를 사용하는 방식으로의 변화를 보이며 가로쓰기에서 더욱 본격화되었다. 문체의 변화는 구두법이 사이 띄우기와 문장부호로 세분화되는 계기가 되었고, 일제 강점기와 미군정기 국어 교과서를 통해 이를 확인할 수 있었다.
