The purpose of this study is to offer a comprehensive investigation of both Lloyd-Jones’ conviction on Spirit baptism and its close connection with his homiletics. Lloyd-Jones’ doctrine of Spirit baptism stems from the Reformed doctrine related to assurance of salvation and revival, which had been propagated from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, rather than being indebted to Pentecostal or Charismatic doctrines. At the same time, his doctrine of Spirit baptism is a thoughtful re-appropriation of the older doctrines within the context of his own day, rather than a simple repetition of their original content. His doctrine was shaped, on the one hand, by Puritan spirituality and Welsh revivalism and, on the other, by his personal experience of the Spirit, which served to confirm the doctrinal views that he had gained from these earlier sources. Most of all, his avid reading of the history of revival and his life-long aspiration for revival was the matrix in which his doctrine of Spirit baptism had been formed and developed. The matrix eventually led Lloyd-Jones’ doctrine of Spirit baptism and his understanding of true preaching to be distinguished from the Reformed tradition, influencing him to place more emphasis on the exceptional works of the Spirit, including the immediate work of the Spirit apart from the Word. Lloyd-Jones’ conviction regarding the necessity of Spirit baptism in true preaching still tells us of the urgent need to return to “the ancient supply,” the baptism of the Spirit, aspiring to experience God’s eternal love that it conveys, as the true source of spiritual “fire” and the new covenant power in our preaching ministries.

본 논문의 목적은 마틴 로이드 존스의 성령 세례 교리와 그의 참된 설교에 대한 이해와의 깊은 연관성을 분석하고자 함이다. 그의 성령 세례에 대한 입장은 오순절주의나 은사주의와 동일하다거나, 이들에게 영향을 받았다기 보다는, 16세기부터 19세기에 걸쳐 설파되었던 “구원의 확신”과 “부흥”이라고 하는 개혁주의 전통의 두 교리에서 파생되었다. 동시에 그의 성령 세례 교리는 이 두 교리들을 원래의 내용 그대로 다시 소개한 것이라기 보다는, 그가 살았던 시대의 콘텍스트 안에서 이 교리들을 발전시키고, 재전유화(re-appropriation)한 것이다. 그의 성령 세례 교리는 한편으로는 청교도 영성과 웨일즈 부흥주의에 의해, 다른 한편으로는 그의 개인적인 성령 체험에 의해 형성되었다. 무엇보다도 부흥을 향한 로이드 존스의 평생의 갈망과 이로 인한 부흥의 역사에 관한 그의 열정적인 독서와 연구야말로 그의 성령 세례 교리가 형성되고 발전하는 매트릭스였다. 이 매트릭스는 결과적으로 그의 성령 세례 교리 뿐 아니라 진정한 설교에 대한 이해를 개혁주의 전통과는 구별되게 하였다. 참된 설교가 되기 위해서는 성령으로의 세례가 반드시 필요하다는 로이드 존스의 확신은 오늘날에도 설교 사역에 있어서 영적인 “불”의 원천으로서와 새 언약적 능력으로서의 성령의 부으심의 긴급한 필요를 일깨워주고 있다.
