This study is aimed at identifying the sources of correctional officer legitimacy. More specifically, this study builds on the prior literature by assessing whether individual factors and prison experiences influence prisoners’ perceptions of prison officer regarding legitimacy. Using data from prisoners in South Korea, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model was employed to examine the relationships among individual characteristics, prison experiences, and prison officer legitimacy. The results revealed that prisoners who are young or lower in self-control are more likely to hold lower levels of correctional officer legitimacy. Also, prior imprisonment, time served, and violent victimization were negatively associated with perceptions of prison officer legitimacy. This study provides evidence that individual characteristics and prison experiences are significant factors shaping prison officer legitimacy.

이 연구는 개인 특성과 교도소에서 겪은 경험들이 교도관 정당성 인식과 어떤 관계가 있는지 확인하고자 하였다. 전국 20개 교도소 986명을 대상으로 한 설문 조사를 분석한 결과 개인 특성 변인 중 연령과 자기 통제력은 교도관 정당성 인 식에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 교도소 내 경험 변인의 경우 이 전의 구금 경험, 구금 기간, 그리고 폭력피해 경험이 유의미한 부적 효과를 내는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 연구 결과에 관한 공헌점, 정책 함의, 그리고 연구의 한계점을 논의하였다.
