Natural law ethics is a theory that has exerted a lot of influence on humans with a long historical tradition, and its core ethical principle is to “Follow Nature.” According to John Stuart Mill, nature is divided into ‘nature as it exists’ and ‘nature as it should exist’ and discussion of nature as it should exist is actually pointless. Therefore, focusing on nature as it exists is the right attitude and the argument of natural law ethics needs to be examined in accordance with the methodology of “Study Nature.” From this point of view, among the four fundamental values that are important in the natural law ethics, reproductive value is at risk of misinterpreting human nature due to religious bias. Also, the doctrine of double effect, which is a practical policy of natural law ethics, is not a reliable rational judgment but rather a post-justification based on intuitive judgment. As a unique human nature emphasized in the natural law ethics, reason can play a role in manual mode appropriate for solving new ethical problems in modern time, so it would be desirable to give a central role in this aspect.

자연법 윤리는 긴 역사적 전통을 가지고 인간들에게 많은 영향력을 행사해온 이론으로, 그 핵심적 윤리의 원칙은 “자연을 따르라.”는 것이 다. 존 스튜어트 밀에 따르면 자연은 ‘존재하는 것으로서의 자연’과 ‘존 재해야만 하는 것으로서의 자연’으로 구분되고, 사실상 존재해야만 하 는 것으로서의 자연에 대한 논의는 무의미한 것이다. 따라서 존재하는 것으로서의 자연에 초점을 맞추는 것이 올바른 태도이고 “자연을 이해 하라.”의 방법론에 따라 자연법 윤리의 주장을 검토할 필요가 있다. 이 런 관점에서 볼 때, 자연법 윤리에서 중요시하는 네 가지 기본 가치 중 생식 가치는 종교적 편향으로 인해 인간의 자연적 본성을 잘못 이 해하게 할 위험성이 있다. 또한 자연법 윤리의 실천적 방침인 이중 결 과의 원리는 이성적 판단이라기보다 오히려 직관적 판단에 따른 사후 정당화로 보는 것이 적합하다. 자연법 윤리에서 강조하는 인간의 고유 한 본성으로서 이성은 현대의 새로운 윤리 문제 해결에 알맞은 수동 모드의 역할을 수행할 수 있기에 이런 측면에서 이성의 중심적 역할을 부여하는 것이 바람직한 태도가 될 것이다.
