Gadamer is critical of Plato while discussing three types of ethical knowledge, namely episteˉ meˉ , techneˉ , and phroneˉ sis in Truth and Method. According to Gadamer, Plato’s episteˉ meˉ is theoretical knowledge, which is empty knowledge that cannot be utilized in specific action areas. Techneˉ has the advantage of being applicable to specific situations, but tries to unconditionally use the knowledge it already has. In contrast, Gadamer argues that Aristotle's phroneˉ sis is an ethical knowledge that has the potential to be applied to changing situations. This article examines the legitimacy of Gadamer's critique of Plato’s ethics and attempts to reveal that Plato's ethical techneˉ is an ethical knowledge that can be applied in reality as a concept that encompasses episteˉ meˉ and phroneˉ sis.

가다머는 『진리와 방법』에서 세 가지의 윤리적 지식, 즉 episteˉ meˉ 와 techneˉ , 그리고 phroneˉ sis를 논의하면서 플라톤에 대해서 비판적인 입 장을 취한다. 가다머에 따르면 플라톤의 episteˉ meˉ 는 이론적인 윤리 지 식으로써 구체적인 행위 영역에서는 활용될 수 없는 공허한 지식이며, techneˉ 는 구체적 상황에 적용할 수 있는 장점은 있으나 가진 지식을 무조건적으로 사용하려고만 한다. 이에 비하여 phroneˉ sis는 변화무쌍 한 상황에 ‘적용(Anwendung)’ 가능성이 있는 윤리적 인식이다. 이 글 은 가다머의 플라톤 윤리 비판의 정당성을 살펴보고 플라톤의 윤리적 techneˉ 가 episteˉ meˉ 와 phroneˉ sis를 포괄하는 개념으로써 현실에서도 적 용할 수 있는 윤리적 지식임을 드러내 보고자 한다.
