The purpose of this study is to reconsider the significances of moral educational history of Ethics Textbook (倫理學敎科書), which is known as a moral training textbook of the Korean Empire. For this purpose, this study was conducted in two stages. First, in order to determine the unique value of Ethics Textbook as a moral training textbook of the Korean Empire, it was compared with the original New Ethics Textbook (新編倫理敎科書) and other moral training textbooks published at a similar time. In particular, the ‘educational value of whole-person’ and ‘nationalistic characteristics’ of Ethics Textbook were discussed. Second, this study reconsidered whether the significances of moral educational history of this textbook presented in previous studies were valid. ㉠ The time and space in which Ethics Textbook was used were not Japan during the Meiji (明治) period, but the Korean Empire in national crisis, ㉡ the contents of Ethics Textbook were revised according to the history of the Korean Peninsula and the political situation of the Korean Empire, ㉢ the other subjects (Korean, History) objectively evaluated textbooks published during this period, the following conclusions were concluded by synthesizing the above three points. The previously proposed the significances of moral educational history of Ethics Textbook are valid above a certain level and should not be disparaged as error or expanded interpretation.

본 연구의 목적은, 대한제국의 수신교과서로 알려진 『윤리학교과서』의 도덕교육사(史)적 함의를 재검토하는 것이다. 이 목적을 위해 본 연구는 두 단계로 진행되었다. ⓐ 첫째로, 『윤리학교과서』가 가진 대한제국 수신교과서로서의 독자성을 판단하기 위해, 저본인 『신편윤리교과서』 및 유사시기에 발간된 다른 수신교과서들과 내용을 비교하면서, 이 교과서의 ‘전인교육적 활용도’와 ‘민족주의적 색채’에 대해 논의하였다. 전자에 있어, 대한제국의 교육계 및 신학제였던 학교에서는 삼육을 교육의 강령으로 중요하게 여겼고, ‘대한제국 교육용’이라는 점이 명시된 『윤리학교과서』는 이 목표 달성에 있어 활용 가치가 컸을 것임을 미루어 살펴보았다. 후자에 있어, 전인교육과 함께 당시 교육계에서 중시한 공통의 목표, 즉 민족주의자로서의 역량 배양 및 애국심의 고취라는 측면에서 있어서도 『윤리학교과서』가 유의미한 서적이었음을 살펴보았다. ⓑ 둘째로, 선행 연구에서 제시된 이 교과서의 도덕교육사적 함의가 타당한지를 고찰하였다. 결론적으로 『윤리학교과서』가 사용된 시간과 공간은 메이지기의 일본이 아니라 국난에 처한 대한제국이었고, 한반도의 역사 및 대한제국의 정치적 실정에 맞춰 내용도 수정되었으며, 타교과(국어⋅역사)에서 이 시기의 교과서를 다룰 때 견지하는 관점 등을 근거로, 기존에 제시된 『윤리학교과서』의 도덕교육사적 함의가 오류나 과대 해석과 같이 저평가되어서는 안 된다고 판단하였다.
