This paper examines the effects of national unification awareness on the level of positive feeling toward unification and verifies the mediating role of education. Based on the 2019 Unification Awareness Report, mediation analysis and a structural equation model are performed. First, the study finds that the unification awareness differs significantly across gender and age. Men have a greater awareness of the unification. The awareness also increases with age. The level of positive feeling toward unification also significantly differs across gender and age. Second, the study shows that unification awareness has a significant effect on the level of positive feeling toward unification. That is, high unification awareness can infer positive feelings toward unification and that both awareness and education have significant effects on the level of positive feeling toward unification. The research also suggests that awareness is more effective than education on changing the level of positive feeling toward unification. Third, awareness has a direct effect on the positive feeling, and that education has an indirect effect through mediation. Lastly, through statistical analysis, the study shows that awareness and education are both relevant factors. The awareness affects education then indirectly affects the level of positive feeling toward unification.

본 연구의 목적은 국민이 경험하는 통일의식이 긍정적 통일감정에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고 통일교육이 긍정적 통일감정에 미치는 매개효과를 검증하는 것이다. 본 연구는 ‘2019 통일의식조사’에서 실시한 연구자료를 활용하여 매개회귀분석과 구조방정식 모형 분석을 실시하였다. 첫째, 통일의식은 성별과 연령에 따라 유의미 한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 남성이 여성보다 통일의식이 높은 것으로 나타났고 연령이 많을수록 통일 의식이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 긍정적 통일감정 또한 성별과 연령에 따라 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 둘째, 통일의식이 긍정적 통일감정에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 통일의식이 높을수록 통일에 대한 감정이 긍정적이었고, 통일의식과 통일교육이 긍정적 통일감정에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 통일의식이 통일교육보다 긍정적 통일감정에 더 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 통일의식은 긍정적 통일감정에 직접적인 영향을 미치고 통일교육이 매개변인으로 긍정적 통일감정에 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 넷째, 통일의식과 통일교육이 긍정적 통일감정에 미치는 영향에 대한 모형적합도 지수는 통계적 기준을 충족하므로 타당성이 입증되었다. 즉 주요 변인 간 경로에 대한 구조모형에서 통일의식이 통일교육에 영향을 미치고 통일교육은 긍정적 통일감정에 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다.
