This study explored possibility focusing on location selection in relation to the creation of a world peace park in the aspect of peaceful use of DMZ(demilitarized zone). The factors of location selection were applied the DMZ ecosystem protection and the minimized environmental damage, the symbolism of peace, the preservation and utilization of historical, cultural and security resources, the accessibility through the use of roads and railways, and the linkage with the existing operating programs. The 3 places such as Paju in western area, Goseong in eastern region and Cheolwon in central area were most suitable for the location of the DMZ World Peace Park. The remaining districts need to be maintained as the zone of peace in the dimension of buffer zone and of ecosystem conservation. DMZ, which is rich in biosphere conservation and in natural heritage, is the common heritage of mankind that the world including the Korean people should share its value. Given promoting the listing of DMZ as a World Heritage Site of UNESCO, the ecological characteristics should be well preserved especially. As for implications, first, the location of the DMZ World Peace Park needs to refrain from the step-by-step extension. Second, the location selection easy for accessibility is needed. Third, the location selection is demanded that can apply the ecological and security, history & cultural programs operated by cities and counties adjacent to the DMZ in connection with the DMZ World Peace Park.

이 연구는 비무장지대(DMZ)의 평화적 활용 측면에서 세계평화공원 조성과 관련하여 입지선정을 중심 으로 그 가능성을 탐색하였다. 입지선정 요인은 DMZ 생태계 보호와 환경파괴의 최소화, 평화의 상징성, 역 사·문화·안보 자원의 보존과 활용, 도로와 철도의 활용을 통한 접근성, 기존 운용 프로그램과의 연계 등을 적 용하였다. 서부권의 파주, 동부권의 고성, 중부권의 철원 등 3개가 DMZ 세계평화공원의 입지로 가장 적합 하였다. 나머지 지역은 완충지대 및 생태계 보존 차원에서 평화지대로 유지시켜야 한다. 생물권 보전과 자연유산이 풍부한 DMZ는 한민족을 포함하여 세계가 그 가치를 공유해야 할 인류의 공동 유산이다. DMZ를 유네스코(UNESCO) 세계문화유산으로 등재를 추진하려면 무엇보다 생태적 특성이 잘 보존되어야 한다. 시사점은 첫째, DMZ 세계평화공원의 입지는 단계별 확대를 지양해야 한다. 둘째, 접근성 이 편리한 입지선정이 필요하다. 셋째, DMZ 인접 시군이 운용하고 있는 생태 및 안보·역사·문화 프로그램을 DMZ 세계평화공원과 연계하여 활용할 수 있는 입지선정이 요구된다.
