Is the primary(=elementary) physical education a academic discipline? This study raises the question of whether primary physical education, which has a deep connection with sport science and pedagogy, which is already recognized as a discipline, has accumulated great achievements in research and practice, but at the same time raises the question of whether these achievements can guarantee academic identity. It aims to promote follow-up research and discourse for establishment. To this purpose, by examining the characteristics of primary physical education research, the specificity of the research subject and the research subject was captured. And while examining the trends in academic identity discourse that has been conducted in the fields of sport science and primary pedagogy, which are closely related to primary physical education, it was emphasized that it is necessary and important to explore the academic identity or essence. Based on this exploration, as development tasks for establishing the academic identity of primary physical education, it is proposed expanding the discourse on the conceptualization of primary physical education, characterizing primary physical education research, publishing specialized books, and fostering/supporting the next generation of academics.

초등체육은 학문인가? 이 연구는 이미 학문으로 인정받은 체육학 및 교육학과 깊은 연관을 맺고 있는 초등체육이 연구 영역과 실천 분야에서 놀라운 성과를 이루었으나 이러한 성과가 과연 학문적 정체성을 담보할 수 있는지 문제 제기하는 동시에 학문적 정체성 정립을 위한 후속 연구 및 담론을 촉진하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 먼저 초 등체육 연구의 특성을 살펴보면서 연구 대상과 연구 주체 차원에서의 특수성을 포착하였다. 그리고 체육학과 초등 교육학 분야에서 진행되어 온 학문적 정체성 담론의 동향을 살펴보면서 초등체육의 학문적 정체성 또는 본질에 대 한 탐색이 필요하고 중요한 시점인 것을 강조하였다. 이러한 탐색을 바탕으로 초등체육의 학문적 정체성 정립을 위 한 발전 과제로 초등체육의 개념화 담론 확대, 초등체육 연구의 특성화, 전문 도서 발간, 학문 후속세대의 육성 및 지원을 제안하였다.
