The appearance of medical enlightenment developed by the Catholic Church in Korea in the 1910s can be understood through the ‘Various questions and answers’, ‘Academic’, and ‘Hygiene’ sections of the Kyunghyang Japjee. The Kyunghyang Japjee, which was only permitted to include religious content, could not contain articles criticizing or criticizing the Japanese colonial policy or the reality of government. However, it was possible to make “essential knowledge”, which was the purpose of the publication of the Kyunghyang Shinmun, “easy for everyone to understand”. The medical knowledge contained in the ‘Various questions and answers’, ‘Study’, and ‘Hygiene’ sections was essential knowledge not only for Catholics but also for Koreans at the time. Foreign missionaries who lived with Koreans for a long time in Korea, various diseases suffered by Korean clergy and believers, and the vivid images of Koreans suffering from various diseases next to them, prepared ‘sections’ for medical enlightenment. Therefore, the topics and contents covered in these ‘sections’ show the diseases that Koreans were suffering from at the time, and the various medicinal materials and treatment methods used to treat those diseases. The ‘Various questions and answers’ sections were intended to help cure diseases by briefly but in various ways explaining various diseases, symptoms, treatment drugs, and methods of preparation. This is because information and knowledge to protect physical health as well as mental health were “essential knowledge” that the Kyunghyang Shinmun, which was succeeded by the Kyunghyang Japjee, emphasized for the purpose of its founding. The ‘Study’ sections specifically explained the epidemic and emphasized hygiene. The ‘Various questions and answers’ sections focused on treatment after illness, while the ‘Study’ sections focused on explaining the causes, vectors, and prevention of infectious diseases. It can be said that the direction and content of medical enlightenment is a step forward from treatment to prevention. The ‘Hygiene’ sections emphasized disease prevention and pediatric hygiene, and continued to explain medical care in connection with the church. In addition, by emphasizing pediatric hygiene, it aroused interest in children and infants, and although it exposed the limitations of ignoring and denigrating Koreans' private treatment methods, it contributed to the medical enlightenment of Koreans by emphasizing the treatment and treatment of doctors. However, as time passed, similar content was repeated, and various newspapers published in the 1920s began to deal with hygiene and health issues professionally. So Kyunghyang Japjee, a religious magazine, completed the sections of medical-related articles starting in 1911.

1910년대 한국천주교회가 전개한 의료계몽의 모습은 『경향잡지』의 ‘각색문제’, ‘학문’, ‘위생’ 난들을 통해 파악된다. 종교적인 내용 수록만을 허용받은 『경향잡지』에는 일제식민정책이나 통치의 실상을 비판·비난하 는 글을 실을 수 없었다. 그러나 『경향신문』 창간 목적이었던 “요긴한 지 식”을 “모든 사람이 알아듣기 쉽게” 만들 수는 있었다. ‘각색문제’, ‘학문’, ‘위생’ 난에 수록된 의료지식은 천주교 신자들은 물 론 당시 한국인들에게 요긴한 지식이었다. 한국에서 오랫동안 한국인들과 함께 생활하였던 외국인 선교사, 한국인 성직자들과 신자들이 걸렸던 각 종 질병, 그리고 그들 곁에서 각종 질병으로 고통당하는 한국인들의 생생 한 모습이 의료 계몽을 위한 ‘난’들을 마련하게 하였다. 그러므로 이들 ‘난’ 에서 다룬 주제와 내용은 당시 한국인들이 겪고 있던 질병과 그 질병을 치 료하기 위해 활용했던 각종 약재들과 치료방법들을 보여준다. ‘각색문제’ 난은 각종 질병과 증상, 치료약재들과 조제방법들을 간략하 게 그러나 다양하게 설명함으로써 질병치료에 도움되고자 하였다. 정신적 인 건강과 함께 육신의 건강을 지키기 위한 정보와 지식은 『경향잡지』가 계승한 『경향신문』이 창간 목적으로 강조하였던 ‘요긴한 지식’이었기 때 문이다. ‘학문’ 난은 전염병을 구체적으로 설명하고, 위생을 강조하였다. ‘각색문제’ 난은 질병에 걸린 후의 치료에 중점을 두었는데, ‘학문’ 난은 전 염병의 원인과 전염병 매개체, 그리고 전염병 예방을 설명하는데 주력하 였다. 의료 계몽의 방향과 내용이 치료에서 예방으로 한 단계 나아간 것이 라 할 수 있다. ‘위생’ 난은 질병예방과 소아위생을 강조하였고, 교회와 연계하여 의료 를 계속 설명하였다. 그리고 소아위생을 강조함으로써 어린이와 잉부에 대한 관심을 환기시켰으며, 한국인들의 민간진료방법을 무시하고 폄하하 는 한계를 드러내기는 하였으나 의사의 진료와 치료를 강조함으로써 한국 인들의 의료계몽에 기여하였다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 비슷한 내용들을 되풀이하고, 1920년대에 발행된 각종 신문잡지들이 위생과 건강의 문제 를 전문적으로 다루기 시작했기에 종교잡지인 『경향잡지』는 1911년부터 시작한 의료 관련 기사 수록을 마무리하였다.
