The Imjin War is an important event as a turning point that divides the Joseon Dynasty into the early and late periods. Since liberation, many research results have been published on the Imjin War. Open books or academic books that describe the Japanese Invasion of Korea in general and comprehensively are very insufficient. In this respect, the opening of the Imjin War, which describes the Japanese Invasion of Korea as a whole, is of great importance in its research history. The National History Compilation Committee published a general book of Korean history reflecting the research of Korean history of the time. Korean History 12, published in 1977, and Korean History 29, published in 1994, can be said to be of great significance in terms of the opening of the Imjin War, which reflects the research results of the time. Despite the significance of the two writings in learning and studying the Imjin War, the historical significance of these books has not been properly investigated. In this paper, two comprehensive writings describing the Imjin War were reviewed historically. In order to understand the historical significance of the two writings, the research trends in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s and 1990s were examined. Based on the review of this research history, a historical review of the description of Volume 12 and Volume 29 was attempted. Based on these works, we tried to find the direction of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in the future.

임진왜란은 조선 시대를 전기와 후기로 나누는 분기점으로 중요한 사건이다. 해방 이후 지금까지 임진왜란에 대한 많은 연구성과가 발표되었지만, 이를 전체적⋅종합적으로 서술한 개설서 혹은 학술 저서는 매우 미흡한 실정이다. 이러한 점에서 임진왜란을 전체적으로 기술한 개설서는 연구사적 의미가 적지 않다. 국사편찬위원회에서는 당대의 연구를 반영한 한국사 총서를 간행하였다. 그 가운데 1977년 간행한 『한국사』 12와 1995년에 간행된 『한국사』 29는 당대까지의 연구성과를 반영한 임진왜란 개설서라는 점에서 주목된다. 임진왜란을 학습⋅연구하는 데 있어 두 저술이 갖는 비중이 작지 않음에도 불구하고, 그동안 이 책들이 갖는 연구사적 의미는 제대로 구명되지 못했다. 이 논문에서는 임진왜란을 종합적으로 기술한 두 저술을 사학사적으로 검토하였다. 두 저술의 간행이 갖는 연구사적 의미를 파악하기 위해 1960~70년대와 1980~90년대의 연구 경향을 살펴보았다. 이 연구사 검토를 바탕으로 󰡔한국사󰡕 12와 29의 기술 내용에 관한 사학사적 검토를 시도하였다. 이러한 작업을 바탕으로 향후 임진왜란의 방향을 모색해 보았다.
