The occurrence of Dengaku is closely related to agricultural traditions, as seen from the combination of the words “field” and “music” in the constitution of the word “Dengaku.” The earliest form of Dengaku can be found in the records of Eiga Monogatari. Dengaku’s relation to agricultural rituals is exemplified in its use in the event held at the Tsuchimikado Mansion to celebrate the commencement of rice planting. The following three factors were presented as the basis for this; umbrellas as ritual tools, the Empress Dowager Shoshi celebrating waka for the Emperor Goichijo, and the structure of the literature. As depicted in Eiga Monogatari, during the Heian era, when aristocratic culture was at its zenith, the sight of the Empress Dowager watching the Dengaku performance was one of the most surprising events at the time. Moreover, portrayal of Dengaku with ordinary people provide exceptional cases when considering the corpus of Heian literature. The reason for leaving the story about Dengaku in the records of Eiga Monogatari could be largely attributed to its symbolic agricultural significance.

덴가쿠는 ‘밭(田)’이라는 글자와 ‘음악(樂)’이 결합된 그 명칭에서 볼 수 있듯이 발생 배경에 농경적 요소가 깊게 관련되어 있다. 덴가쿠의 초기 형태는 『에이가 모노가타리』를 통해 찾아볼 수 있다. 쓰치미카도 저택에서의 행사는 모심기를 위한 공연으로 덴가쿠의 농경의례적 성격을 뚜렷하게 보여준다. 그 근거로서 다음의 세 요소를 들 수 있다. 첫째, 우산은 풍부한 강우를 기원하는 제의적 도구이다. 둘째, 모심기와 덴가쿠에 이어지는 쇼시의 와카는 고이치조 천황의 치세에 대한 경축을 담고 있다. 셋째, 작품구조상 제19권과 제20권은 성인식과 수연, 덴가쿠와 부가쿠, 성장과 장수라는 대조를 이루고 있다. 귀족문화가 중심이 되었던 헤이안 시대에 『에이가 모노가타리』에 그려진 것처럼 황태후가 밭에서 공연되는 덴가쿠를 구경하고 농부들을 향해 화답하는 것은 당시로서는 대단히 놀라운 사건 중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 더욱이 그 속에 묘사된 덴가쿠와 서민들의 모습은 헤이안 문학 전체로 보면 이례적으로 채택된 사건이다. 『에이가 모노가타리』가 이렇게 덴가쿠 기사를 남긴 이유로는 초기 덴가쿠에 녹아있던 상징적 농경의례로서의 성격이 크게 작용했다고 할 수 있다.
