When Baekje’s Buddhism spread to Japan, it caused a conflict between Japanese indigenous gods and Buddhism, leading to a political conflict. These political events were accompanied by the spread of infectious diseases called pestilence and smallpox. This paper argues that it was believed that the native Japanese god caused, and which were identified as new epidemics along with the advent of Buddhism in Baekje. After Baekje Buddhism had been accepted in Japan during the reign of King Uija, a royal family member, Gyogi, fled to Japan. However, a historical record holds that immediately after exile, the person who followed him and his child suddenly died, and Gyogi was afraid and reluctant to leave the bodies unattended. recognized this as a death due to the epidemic of plague, and I was able to see that Buddhist rituals were performed when they prayed to indigenous gods first, but they were ineffective. This paper analyzed the records related to the epidemic during the spread and eventual acceptance of Buddhism from Baekje to Japan, and tried to construct an image of Baekje society, which remains under-researched.

백제의 불교는 일본에 전파되면서 일본의 토착신과 불교 사이의 갈등을 일으켰 고, 이를 매개로 한 정치적 갈등으로 번졌다. 그리고 이러한 정치적 사건과 함께 疫疾(pestilence)과 痘瘡(smallpox)이라는 전염병(plague)이 붙어 다녔다. 이에 대하 여 본고에서는 일본 토착신이 疫疾을 일으킨 것으로, 痘瘡은 백제에서 불교와 함께 새로 전래된 전염병으로 파악하였다. 백제 불교가 일본에 정착된 이후, 의자왕 시기에 왕족인 교기가 왜에 망명하였 다. 그런데 망명 직후에 그를 따르던 사람과 그의 아이가 갑자기 죽었고, 이를 두 려워하고 꺼려서 시체를 방치하고 와보지도 않았다는 기록이 있다. 필자는 이를 역병의 유행에 따른 죽음으로 파악하였고, 토착 신에게 먼저 빌었으나 효험이 없 자, 불교 의례를 행한 점도 살펴볼 수 있었다. 본고는 백제에서 일본으로의 불교 전파 및 정착 과정에 나타난 역병 관련 기록 을 분석하였고, 이는 자료가 부족한 백제 사회의 한 모습을 복원할 수 있는 중요한 토대가 될 것으로 기대한다.
